guys most of the wallpapers today have a size of 1600*1200 24bit 96 dpi.

if i have a jpeg then my file size is just 300-400kb.

so can you add that option of 1600*1200 in gallery section

if not, i would be glad to know the reason behind it, thanks.

1600x1200 is way above standard.

Long to go before the majority are in a position to support that kinda resolution.

The standard for now is 1024x768. :)

i agree with that, but once you set it as your desktop, it would be resized anyway, even my desktop is 1024*678, i asked because i dont want to manipulate the original....

& file size is small enough around 350 kbs...

1024 was the standard back in 1998, it's useless now as it doesn't even scale well to fit larger desktops.
1600x1200 is what people should be downloading their wallpapers at now.
Any decent image manipulation software will always be able to downscale them perfectly to fit any resolution.

Even 1280x1024 isn't future proof as it won't resize perfectly to fit 1600x1200 without getting squashed out of proportion rendering your entire wallpaper collection useless when upgrading to a 21" or higher.
1280x960 is somewhat futureproof and a good balance of quality/size, but most sites chose the weird 1280x1024 over it.

My entire collection is in the highest res available.

nice... good to hear that ur entire coll. is of high res. but not everyone can afford a monitor supporting res of 1600x1200 or above and thats wat i meant by standard. A standard is one that computing masses can afford and back in 1998, ppl were happy with their 640x480 screen res. afaik. ;)

I agree abt future proofing though and keeping that in mind we do allow wallpapers in JPG and JPEG format upto a max res. of 1280x960. GIF, PNG and BMP are supported upto a res. of 1024x768 as these formats take up more disk space compared to a JPG and JPEG. In anycase, if we get more requests for the same, we might consider relaxing the upper limits by some margin. :)

IMO a 1600*1200 JPG looks way better than a 10*7 one even after setting as a wallpaper at a 10*7 resolution.

i agree there, 1600*1200 wont look better at 1024*768, it will look just the same :) your os would resize it to fit your desktop.

Well frankly speaking,
I dont think everyone here has a monitor that supports a resolution of more than 1024x768.
This includes members who have old monitors.

As of now, it was decided that the wallpapers have a size of 1024x768.
But, since you have suggested, we will discuss this among the staff and let you know the decision about it soon.

Till we announce anything, the standard remains 1024x768.
Thanks.

Yeah it's true, it's not placebo.
As long as the artist bothered to make a 1600x1200 version from the original psd, it does look better downsized to 1024 as compared to one that was already at 1024.

All jaggies and jpeg artifacting gets smoothed out downsizing from 1600 to 1024.
Same as how antialiasing works, render at twice the size then cram it all into a smaller display area.

Anyway my first post was about wallpaper resolutions in general.
b/w isn't cheap and it makes no sense storing 1600x1200 images on the TE server.
