HI
I want to have a laptop wit a budget at max of 65 -70k
Lots of people have told me not to go for dell ( thou they r good but start giving problems after some time ) and vaio ( the review is not good). i want to know is that true.
also please suggest me a good laptop
my desired config is
2 ghz ,800 mhz + 4 mb cache + 2 gb ram + atleast 120 gb hdd + 15 inches+ cam +DVD+R/W
thts the basic , i plan to use it for general purpose with little office work n lots of entertainment purposes
i have a little inclination for lenovo, can nyone sugest wich wud b the best model suited for me and nyone suggesting ny other manufacturer is most welcome!
:)

Dell is good. + excellent and fast service with many plans available. So i doubt it will start giving problems after some time.

I would recommend staying away from lenovo tho. Too expensive and not enough features. They charge too much IMHO.

+1 for Dell... their XPS 1330 lappy matches your description (except 15" screen) at basic config (I think basic config starts at 60k approx).

Looks-wise it's a nice looking lappy if not as chick as VAIOs, though VAIOs are too bloody expensive IMO.

I've Dell XPS 1210 (12.1" screen), and it's been a joy to use. Good config (2Ghz C2D, 667 FSB, 1GB RAM, 80GB 7200RPM drive, DVDRW, GeForce GO7400 256), bought it for 75k approx around year+ back. Even used Vista Ultimate on it for few months. I don't know who had problems with their dell (whoever told you they give problems later on), but couple of my friends also have dell and all of us have been so far happy with it.

+1 for Lenovo

I own a Lenovo 37Q model (pre Santa Rosa) and it totally roxx! No issues whatsoever..On the contrary, my B-school arranged for DELL Latitudes (Do note that Latitudes are considered much better than Inspirons etal, at least in terms of build quality) for the junta who wanted to procure via college itself..10 of the 60 ordered have conked off within 3 months..Though replacement was immediate but then again it is primarily owing to a great tie-up between DELL and the institute..It may not be the case for you!

And to contradict techie_007, Lenovo's are totally feature packed (Mine has: 1.3MP cam with face recognition, one-key recovery, TV tuner inbuilt, remote..)..I donno where he's coming from ..??..

Just beware of one thing though..The speakers on the Lenovo suck big time..Don't even think about comparing them with the awesome Altec Lansings on the Compaqs/HPs..

PS: Do note that I'm not saying DELL is bad or anything..Infact I know a lot of satisfied DELL customers, even here on TE..Its just that I've a personal experience with a Lenovo notebook and know for sure that its darn good, esp. considering that its on almost 24X7..

buddy remm when u buy lenovo ur buyin stuff from a cheap chinese company tats made it big.,. an as for "1.3MP cam with face recognition, one-key recovery, TV tuner inbuilt, remote.." being features.. well they r like totally standard even in an acer i guess.. i mean a 1.3mp camera is well basic.. face recognition is one of the most stupid feature iv seen in laptops.. remotes r also available wit every other lappy.. one touch recovery is also actually jus a marketing gimmick.. only feature is tv tuner which i doubt how long ud be able to use considerin the advent of cas.. !!

an as for quality dell is the best value for money & quality aspect u have.. they make good quality tested notebooks.. although maybe some batches might have some probs.. but they r best tested laptops pre production !!

stick wit the xps.. the base config could now be urs for about 58k.. whch is a damn nice price for its features..

Not to disagree with you, but how much did u pick up that lenovo for? i can guarantee that the same features would be available (other then the face recognition n other gimmicks ;) ) with Dell or even others at much lower prices. Whatever else it is, lenovo IS DEFINITELY not VFM for the amount u pay Vs the config u get :D Feel free to disagree :ohyeah: I ll wait for other TE Laptop experts to back me up here :)

Lenovo - A "cheap" chinese company? Is that your perception talking my dear friend? ;) Most of the products you buy today including your PDA's etal are manufactured in China..Economies..thats it..Chinese doesn't necessarily mean cheap! O & yes..Lenovo Thinkpads are also..you guessed it..made by that cheap Chinese company -Lenovo...and the world knows that Thinkpads suck the most..Right?

Not saying that the features I had listed were unique (though the one-key recovery totally rocks and trust me buddy its not just some idiotic marketing gimmick!! You can only understand its importance when you are in a dire situation like i was a month or so back..) or something but what other features are we talking about anyway? Enlighten me pls :)

As for XPS, brilliant notebooks but i guess you don't get a 15"er XPS..Do we? :S

No my friend, I've no intention of disagreeing with you just for the heck of it..My requirements included a really sturdy feature-packed notebook and I bought what i felt was correct for me..
DELL, Acer, Compaq are all VFM and i cant disagree with that..Just that with Latitudes crashing every other day in my college, I just stated the facts as were..

Cheers!:hap2:

And yes, just in case you're interested to know, here's the lappy i bought back in early June'07 for 60K Click ME :P with 2GB RAM..

buddy incase u dint notice there was always a difference in prices between ibm notebooks (which were thinkpads) an lenovos.. an there still is a diff.. lenovos still dont offer the same kinda sturdiness which u talk about so broadly in ur points above as the thinkpads.. an as for 15 inches u got the vostro 1500 whch is again amazingly feature packed (in ur words) .. an much more sturdy than the lenovo mentiond by ya.. an plus ud get the same config for like 45-50k easily..

an fyi the lenovo ur talkin about here is no where close to bein a thinkpad buddy.. thinkpads r a diff league.. an tats prob y lenovo had 2 buy its rights from ibm ( to improve its image from being jus another chinese company.)

I guess you're misinformed dear friend...Lenovo bought IBM's computer division and now Thinkpads are also by Lenovo..so when you want a Thinkpad, you go to the market and buy a Lenovo Thinkpad! :P And these very Lenovo Thinkpads still rule the roost when it comes to the business notebook segment.

I agree that the Y series/N-series Lenovo notebooks aren't as sturdy but then again your mentioning that Vostros are sturdier than 'em without trying out the two, is unconvincing..I repeat my bias is based on my own usage of a Lenovo notebook whilst the DELL's around it kept crashing..So we'll leave it at that..shall we? :)

Anyway coming back to the bottom line - Chinese does not necessarily mean cheap (quality, price or otherwise ;))

PS: My apologies to the thread starter for taking this conversation way off-topic.. ;)

That's a pretty good config for 60k Pankaj... as for Dell support, yes it is true that Dell doesn't have service center like HP/Compaq but Dell's support line us handled Wipro. So anytime you call up Dell Service for your trouble, a wipro engineer will come down to help you out.

So far, I never had to call support line. but one of my friend had to and it was quick. So no complaint on that front too.

@Pankaj : If there's one stand-out +ve thing about DELL..It is their service..Give 'em a call and you'll have their engineer at your doorstep..

That said, thats a pretty neat config for 60K..I say go for it if you're fine with a 14"er..

Cheers!
