Forerunner
I want a lappy within 30k....

Priority wise requirements:

1) The powerful the better
2) The smaller the better
3) Reliable

Things i want to do on this:

1) Downloading
2) Movies
3) Some office work (includes java programming)
4) LAN (Only CS)
5) Surfing

I searched and found these options which seems good :

1) Dell Inspiron M101Z with Athlon II Neo @ 1.7GHz 1mb cache, 2GB DDR3, 11.6 Inch and HD4225 - 26k (Flipkart)

2) Sony Vaio YA UPCYA 15FG with i3 @ 1.33GHz 3mb cache, 2GB DDR3 , 11.6 inch and Intel GMA - 29k (Flipkart)

3) Sony VAIO YB VPCYB25AG with AMD Dual core @1.6ghz 1MB Cache , 2GB DDR3, 11.6inch and HD 6310 -22k (flipkart)

4) HP Pavilion DM1-3210AU with AMD Dual core @ 1.6GHZ , 1MB Cache , 2GB DDR3 , 11.6inch and HD 6310 -22k (Flipkart)

So, Which one should i buy. I am more preferred towards Dell because of their excellent service as well as am getting a GPU also. But only 1 thing, Is Athlon II Neo good or better than i3??

OR

Please suggest me any other small in size because i will carry it with myself and i dont like to carry huge heavy bags.
Dont want netbook because i have heard those atom processors are not upto the mark performance wise.
thanks

^Any reason for why buy an HP DM1z over a Sony Vaio YB for the same config?

And is VPCYA15FG's (i3+GMA) combo faster than a (AMD+6310) ?

Because Sony is neither good nor VFM when it comes to laptops. Whatever premium they charge in the name of 'quality' just doesn't show up when it goes for continued repairs

Both are priced at 22k. So HP DM1 has better build quality here than Sony YB?

I can't comment on specific models, however, I haven't seen a lot of VAIOs give a hassle free experience. HP is not what it is used to be once upon a time, however, it isn't that bad either. Why DarkAngel suggested this, he is the best person to tell :)

Why Isnt that Dell one better?? Isnt AMD Athlon II Neo Good?? Is that a dual core proccy??

And on the other hand, see i can buy sony as well as HP, but the main thing matters is the reliability because form past 1 yr i am hearing a lot of cases of HP's poor service and built...So please suggest me a better one as the configs are completely same

^^ Because the previous generation AMD cpus were power guzzling hot cpus with poor battery life. The HP DM1z is the best option for you. If you have 40-50k try getting the Thinkpad x220 - the best ultraportable (business laptop) ever made.

Found the answer written clearly on Anandtech. No more confusion between these three fellows:

HP Pavilion DM1 Series DM1-3210AU vs Sony VAIO YB Series VPCYB15AG vs MSI X Series X370: Compare Computers: Flipkart.com

because DM1Z is better in battery life, build quality and is more comfortable to use.

AnandTech - More of AMD

The dm1z is more attractive, more comfortable to use, and runs longer on the battery to boot.

..If the dm1z didn't exist or at least wasn't an unusually strong design for HP, the YB would seem a lot better and could justify itself. The problem is that the dm1z does exist, the YB is not in a vacuum, and ultimately it is impossible to justify: the dm1z is directly superior on virtually every front.

most of the electronics that i have are from sony including my laptop. the reason i choose sony is only because of the customer support. i am using sony vaio vpceb45fg for the past 7 month and sometimes i run the lappy for continious 2-3 days and it runs without getting a lot of heat. dell is also very good. and try to avoid hp, hearing a lot of problems from my college friends.

^^Mate, vaio`s after sales service is not that great in kolkata.

2-3 days!!I run mine for weeks together..infact I dont even remember when the last time I turned it off.

Regarding HP,the dv6 series is definitely very bad,but the probooks and now the new dm1zs are stable enough.

For programming in these languages, you don't need a powerful machine so a Netbook will do just fine. However, there are a couple of things you might want to consider.

If your decision for a laptop over a netbook is based solely on the assumption that the work you mentioned above is heavy for a netbook, then you're a bit mistaken. The Intel Atom processor can handle that much.

Firstly, choose a machine with a good keyboard like the HP Mini 110 as you probably will be writing tons of code. Another consideration is that the battery life should be good as coding and debugging takes time, so in this respect the Eee PC series shines. Last, but not least, you might want to write an application for an external peripheral so the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 with its ExpressCard slot might also be a good option. Hope this helps.

I got the Asus X42J for 24k. Very similar to the above config but with a 1GB ATI 6470M and 500GB HDD. Far better deal than the X42F.
