Hi i want to buy a PS2(yes a PS2, low budget so pls don't reccomend PS3 or Xbox :) ).

the things i want to know is

1)should i get a new one modded or an already used one that is modded? What will be the cost of a new one? How much can i ask for a 2nd hand console?
2)if i want to play games from an external HDD, will a PS2 slim work?
3)how do i connect this to a CRT computer monitor? which is the best an av-vga or tv tuner for that?

a very low budget, thats why the PS2.

Thanks

a) Do NOT talk about hacking/playing *ahem* games. Talking about modding is allowed till right before the point where you start talking about piracy. :)

b) Good choice for the console. I recently got one too and have been enjoying it a lot.

c) Go for modded console. Get it modded from grey market, or better still, go for a used modded console. Save some money that way, but do check the condition of the laser before finalizing anything. Ask extensively about the amount of time for which the console has been used, and in what capacity.

d) You can run games off external HDD and I hope these are games that you are going to buy and make backups of. ;) There is something called FMCB software. Look it up.

e) I am sorry but I do not know much about AV-VGA or TV tuner hardware.

EDIT: This is my post number 666. Wow!

c) the modded one costs 6k and non-modded one 5.5k, in that same place wer i enquired, a 2nd hand modded costs 3.5k
d) yes but i want to know if it works on a Slim if not, then i would need to buy a Fat thats why.

Get a composite video to VGA converter. Plenty of them available on ebay.

Using FMCB, you can run backups off external HDD. But keep in mind that the USB ports on both the PS2 versions are USB 1.1. This means there will be choppy video during cut scenes and sometimes choppy gameplay too. Evidence of said issues can be found extensively over the WWW.

If going for Fat, then get the network adapter, which will allow you to mount an IDE HDD within the body of the console and run games off it.

If you are getting a pre-modded piece then do find out what kind of mod it is. Either way, a pre-modded console works out just fine. No hassles for you.

About HDD on PS2: yes u can add up an external hdd through usb port the gameplay is fine no problem while playing games or during the cutscenes.

but just 1 prob. that the game will take time when u boot it,when started no prob.

u can add an internal hdd also with some HDD holder i dunno full thing about it but have seen it in many PS Parlour's.
