I think if you will be using only 1 HDD for backup, a case would be better.

Docks would be more useful if you are using more than 1 HDDs.

Also, docks shouldn't be used for long periods of time, that's what I've heard. It heats up if used for long time at a stretch.

^ actually , if you use a dock for backup and dont store the hdd in static covers after use it ends up accumulating a lot of dust which am sure i will not want on my BACK UP HDD

^Memories_dv thanks, I kinda agree. Usage once a week for an hour doesn't warrant a fan.
Stalker - kinda agree too.
^mediahome no offense, but surely you're overstating things with the lots of dust part. I'm sure my HDD wouldn't be untouched for a month or so to catch dust, and it'd be in a clean cupboard nestled in some old vests. Either way, even if you use a drive and leave it in the open, it doesn't catch dust.

Thanks guys, I have a lot of options - but the decision to go casing or dock remains. I think viralbug called it correct here: "I think if you will be using only 1 HDD for backup, a case would be better. Docks would be more useful if you are using more than 1 HDDs".

So I gotta decide whether I'll use 1 HDD or end up with several. The crappy thing is, I seldom delete anything I download, unless it's really rubbish. I've got to start being more selective...

^ nha with me using docks things were different, or may be there is too much dust that creeps in my place. either ways i use to find my hdd in dust if left on the dock, because my backing up way was slightly different, it use to be on for a constant back up of everything thats being downloaded all day long almost, in the end it just din work, there was data loss , or things did not get copied successfully . so i switched to just having the hdd plugged in directly .

Docks even if you're using just one disk. Gonna buy a second case for your next disk? I can vouch for the Vantec docks. Lost one power adapter (4/5 docks between me and friends) to the vagaries of power supplies, but the eject/ slot mechanisms work fine. More than a year of ownership and heavy disk swapping.

Btw, if you do go for a casing, don't forget eSATA. Regular heavy read/ writes on USB is the worst way to utilise one's time.

I have ordered one of these to replace the 2 single slot docks I have. For anyone into heavy swapping of drives like Udit, these look expensive but nice.

I couldn't find out the price..??

Swapping HDDs aint no pain. Its literally plug n play with AHCI enabled.

I currently use the Vantec one as well as have a Sunbeam one. No difference at all, except the Nextar has the power brick separate making it lighter than the sunbeam.

If you meant the Lian li products, PhOeNix here deals in them. Expensive compared to the docks but looks classier and dust proof :bleh:. I'm getting my particular model cos it'll fit into my P80. Hot swap bays finally :)!
