Wanted some clarification on IP configuration

My router's private IP is 192.168.1.1, and so the IP address of my laptop is say 192.168.1.143 and its default gateway is 192.168.1.1.
I was just curious if it is possible that my laptop can be manually configured with an IP address, for e.g., 192.168.45.76 and default gateway remains 192.168.1.1.

Please don't ask the reason for my query, because there is no practical purpose. I am only asking this out of curiosity, and because I do not have any technical knowledge so I am not able to get proper answers from google by hitting the correct keywords.

I doubt it. The IP address of the connected systems can range from 192 168.1.1 to 254. Pick any from these range

168.x also possible if you know how to configure your subnet but it goes lil technical
 
Why not? You can set dhcp reservation on the router for laptops mac id or for any devices you wish to!
I have manually reserved chosen ips for my all devices at home..

Since 192.168.0.0 is a range reserved for private use, there's no reason why you should not be able to assign IPs this way - as long as you set your netmask correctly (16, in this case).

With netmask 255.255.255.0 (or 24), you should be able to use the IP range 192.168.x.0 - 192.168.x.255
With netmask 255.255.0.0 (or 16), the usable IP range could be 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

Unless I missed something it's not possible as subnet mask is different for 192.168.45.x and 192.168.1.x. You can however, manually change your laptop ip 192.168.1.143 to say 192.168.1.55. That'll work.

Subnet mask can be changed to 255.255.0.0 and then anything from 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.255.254 will be available as IP (192.168.0.1 will be the gateway, if I'm correct). Not sure if router firmware has any limitations on such subnet masks.

Interesting. I will test this out with an unused router when I get the chance. I dont want to mess up with my current router settings.

Tested recently. I still do not quite understand subnet properly, but this does work & my curiosity is satiated. Thanks a lot to codelad & napstersquest!
