Warco is a first-person game where players shoot footage instead of a gun. A work in progress at Brisbane-based studio Defiant Development, the game is a collaboration of sorts; Defiant is working with both a journalist and a filmmaker to create a game that puts you in the role of a journalist embedded in a warzone. Ars spoke with Defiant's Morgan Jaffit to learn more about this political game disguised as an FPS.

The game itself—the title of which is actually short for "war correspondent"—follows the story of journalist Jesse DeMarco. Players will experience the process of filming conflicts, going into dangerous situations armed with nothing but a camera. They will then edit the footage into a compelling news story. The scenarios range from intense bursts of action to quieter moments as you discuss the events of the day with fellow journalists in a hotel. Though the main mechanic will be filming the action, Warco is also very much about choice.

"It's also about navigating through a morally gray world and making decisions that have human impact," he explained. "It's about finding the story you want to tell, as each of our environments is filled with different story elements you can film and combine in your own ways. It's both a story telling engine and an action adventure with a new perspective."

The scenarios are designed to mirror the recent tumultuous events in the Middle East and North Africa, in situations cribbed from Maniaty's real-world experiences in the field.

Platforms haven't been revealed as yet. But this seems to be interesting. Will keep a close watch on this.

Re: Warco - an FPS minus the gun!

Interesting, but I wonder how many gamers would like the idea of being a passive watcher?

Re: Warco - an FPS minus the gun!

This looks a very unique kind of a game, it's amazing how games are going in different paths these days.

I could have sworn while watching the trailer I mistook that camera for a gun a couple of times and was itching to shoot :P

I wonder if it will see the light of the day though....

Why do you feel so?

The game seems to be coming from an indie developer IINM.

If you are allowed to film US soldiers killing and raping Afghan citizens, do you think it will be released in US?

The devs. haven't exactly revealed the innards of what exactly are being shot. I am sure Defiant would consider that carefully lest their game runs into a lot of controversies later, affecting the sales as well.

That reminds me of the controversial Russian airport sequence in Modern Warfare 2 . :P

Re: Warco - an FPS minus the gun!

Well it would be pretty boring if you are not allowed to film the realities of war. I mean how many times do you want to capture a dude shooting out his M4...

Re: Warco - an FPS minus the gun!

Although the concept seems great in text I thought even the trailer was a little boring. And the voice acting totally sucks if you ask me.

Re: Warco - an FPS minus the gun!

RPS: There’s an awful lot of gunfire and dead bodies in the trailer I’ve seen; does the game focus on this, or does it give a more holistic view of normality in combat zones?

Jaffit: We cover everything from the frontline to the hotel lobby. We made the decision to focus on one of the high action engagements for the purposes of the trailer in order to show just how hairy things can get. I think we’ve succeeded in that, but the game itself has much more of a focus on light and shade. You’ll be embedded with local troops on patrol, investigate the bases of warlords, interview child soliders, kick back with other reporters, and follow the plights of civilians. As we look at other war games, we want to tell a much broader story, one that involves all of the people affected by the chaos taking place.

RPS:How can you manage realism? Combat at such short ranges is rarely filmed by crews; is that a fear of death thing?

Jaffit: We’re using the reality of war journalism as our baseline, and in many cases that means we’re offering players the opportunity to do things that might be foolhardy. Of course, in that case they’ll suffer the consequences of their actions as well.

RPS: Is there a storyline to the game, or is it a series of vignettes? You’re working with a filmmaker, so I’m assuming the former.

Jaffit: There’s definitely a storyline, but we’re not going too deeply into the content at this time. Suffice to say the local dictatorship is in the midst of falling apart, and that serves as the backdrop for the games events.
