Last night, a friend of mine was sitting at my place waiting for me to come back from my office....Around 8, i get a call saing that the PC refuses to start ...It was shutdown like 10 mins bck and refused to start after that at all...No HDD glow, no fans coming on...absolutely nothing......
Also, the Mouse and KB lights were on (Always on in my mobo even at shutdown..) meaning it wasn't as simple as a loose power cord..... :@

I was aghast...On the way backhome, I kept thinking about what could be wrong.....Was it a a blown Mobo or a blown CPU....Kept hoping that it isn't more than a blown PSU (though if it had been that, how'd the KB/Mouse lights stay on)

Reached back home, opened the box with a heavy heart.... dreading that tell-tale smell of fried electronic parts

WTF...no signs of any blown parts....so I unplug all the connectors, reseat them...tried to start it again...no go

So next I unplug all the peripherals, and try starting the PC with just the basic stuff in...cpu and 1 stik RAM...Still no signs of life

Was About to close the cabinet, dreading a wasted weekend spent carrying the case, component et-al to Ritchie street...and then, I get a brainwave.....

I unplugged the front panel connector, and shorted the power sw pins.......The machin epurrs back to life :P   :hap2: :bleh: :ohyeah: :P :bleh: :) :) :)

Was some relief for sure....

Anyway, currently my PC has two wires dangling outside which I need to short everytime I need to start it......:P

hehe..i had to short wires when the custom power button wasnt ready enuf on my PC :D

So your Main Power button on the PC doesnt work?

Those power switches are simple SPST switches....The damned spring inside may have failed or whatever...Basically it's just a 2 /- Push button switch.....

but the headache it gave me....

Yep, the same thing has happened to me. I need to get my case changed I think. Because I've run through a complete system overhaul (from Athlon XP to Athlon64) and I experience the same problem. My machine acts up like anything if I connect any of the front panel buttons. LEDs don't cause a problem but both RESET and POWER buttons make my system not boot/power on, erratically restart, and what not.

Consequently, I have to manually short the pins when I want to start the machine. What's funny is that even my mother and sister have learnt to do this (i.e. use a screwdriver to short the pins) out of sheer necessity!

Yeah I need to change my case, if not for my own sake..

This happened to me once - one morning after working fine for months pressed power switch and nothing happened - ripped out parts and even with barebone hardware no power - tried a lot of combinations of hardware and NADA - after a couple of hours I was about to give up and then I saw that the DARNED VIP cases reset button was depressed and would not come out - :@ GRRRRR !!!! :@

ooooooo dude , my friend had the same problem, paid hardware guy 3000 rupee to fix it

Sad na.....Actually the credit for the brainwave before closing the case goes to the bottle of KF that I had started sippin on when I got frustrated :@ when things didn't seem to be working out ;)

Are dood, just draw out two wires outta the cabinet and short them na instead of using a scredriver to short the pins and runnin the risk of frying your Mobo accidentally
