Today a sales guy from this company called Dolphin came to my house and tested the water its 913 TDS(borewell) the municipal water show a reading of 897.He says its way over the danger Zone:( he sounded as if i am gonna die soon of kidney failure:S.Is this true? :ashamed:

He told me to go for only RO water purifier's only, this particular model from Dolphin was for Rs 12500, Has a total of 5 filters, 3 filters are placed before the RO membrane and 1 after the membrane.

The guy says my TDS will drop to 60 if i use this dolphin RO filter, after a couple of years the TDS will rise to a max 110 in my area with regular maintanence.

Running cost's :

warranty 1 year

every year = Rs 700(filter's)+Rs100(labor)

every 2 year's = Rs 2100 for RO membrane replacement.

So is the TDS output by this machine acceptable:huh:.Should i take the plunge:huh: waiting for your valuable advice thanks:)

How did he test for TDS at your home? 913 what? mg, gm? per litre etc...

I am pretty sure it is mg/l he used a TDS meter this model to be exact(third from the left the one dipped inside the glass):

Welcome to GenPure

Ok so TDS alone is not dangerous but one has to look at the contents i think a electrolyzer or whatever its called is needed to separate the impurities:huh:.Google says if the TDS is above 500 i need to go for RO

Don't fall for traveling salesmen. They just sell snake-oil and leave.

Thats a good advice but for me service is more important since i am not in some A class city...; i think i live in a D class town(if you can call this a town in the first place:rofl:):P.

this is the manufacturers site anyone heard of Dolphin/genpure are they good:huh:

Welcome to GenPure

One more thing the model has this auto flush feature is this a gimmick or does the feature actually work:ashamed:

The reading seems little incorrect to me.

As in general corporation water supplies in almost all cities in India are from riverbed reservoirs. So its highly unlikely to contain TDS in range of 850 or more.

So get some other person to test the water again (best bet would be to call Eureka Forbes) Every manufacturer of RO Purifiers does provide this facility.

There are many brands in RO market. Some are national some are local.

Eureka Forbes (I wont recommend them), Permionics, Kent, Phillips, Whirlpool are pan india brands.
Hitech, PowerH2O, and there are many which are equally good but with limited coverage.

Where are you located?

If your water TDS content is more than 550-600 you definitely need an RO purifier.

the safe limit for body to tolerate and prescribed is 250-300 ppm (particles per million).

The only disadvantage of RO water is that RO purifier will over-clean the water, ultimately ending up removing the necessary minerals too, so my advise you to would be specially if you have pregnant women, old women, and young kids at home to mix 75% of RO water with 25% of boiled water from your supply that will balance the needs bothway.

^^Medpal sir the guy who lives in the ground floor of my house has a 7 year old RO water purifier(company don't know ) he uses the same water that i use for cooking and drinking .While the same water shows as having a TDS of 917 in my house the same water shows a TDS of only 117 after being treated by his old RO system. So i think his device was working properly :ashamed:.

Though municipal water is available in my area i have to travel a KM to get it.So i thought of getting an RO system and using the borewell water:).

About the brands you mentioned yep me too hear horrid stories about EF ASS:@.Google says kent uses some DOW membrane that is good but am worried about the service and the running cost of these big brands:no:.
and i am located near arakkonam "town" (45kms from kanchepuram).

About mixing the waters thats a good advice i will follow it:hap2:.

EDIT: i dont see EF guys near my place the dolphin guy said EF ran away
from the area due to some blah blah reason. But i will get the water tested in Kings lab in guindy(chennai) :hap2: .

UPDATE: just called Hitech in chennai they are saying the TDS will drop below 50 if i used their product. They refused to disclose the price over phone told me to bring a water sample in person. The guy said if i pay Rs 3000 for AMC they will maintain everything.I THINK it will cost anywhere between 12000-13000 but these guys are asking 3000 bucks every year for AMC :(.

the comprehensive AMC of any RO plant runs from 1500 - 4000 depending upon model, capacity, make and the person.

3000 for comprehensive AMC does not sound too costly but you have to face them in person to get the accurate quote.

I definitely rate Hitech as the a better service support brand specially here in Gujarat. And I am sure they are carrying the same tradition every where.

RO machines are costly affair to purchase, to maintain. Environment wise also they waste atleast 35% of water.

If you want a cost effective solution then you can go for a water softener plus a Ultrafilteration device like (pureflo of permionics, Pureit of HLL, and Swachh of Tata).

This solution will not reduce your TDS count by much but will definitely get rid off other impurities which are biological and harmfull and undissolved solids.

Still if you need info do buzz, will reply after tuesday and going off for holi holidays with family.

there are good informative threads here on TE itself about what is good and approximate cost of ownership.
