Mr.J

Innovator
I've 2 HDDs. Primary is new 1TB WD black and another is old 250 GB which I bought in Feb 2008. Right now, the 250 GB Hard disk isn't displayed anywhere. Not in BIOS or Computer Management. I've tried changing cables but no luck. :(
Is it gone? and if it is, is there any way I can backup data stored on it before giving it for RMA?

@Mr.J try running the system on a Live disc of Ubuntu and see if it shows up OR try to see if the BIOS detects the drive. If it is detected you can try to back it up while in the Ubuntu runtime.

If the answer to both is no, then most chances the controller of the driver has given up, maybe the head has crashed into the drive OR both. In that case you will need professional help in recovering the data and they will charge you per-GB and difficulty of extracting the data.

Hope this helps and wishing things resolve at the earliest, Cheerio!

The BIOS is also not detecting it. I've now disconnected it. Will give it a try after couple of days.
Any way to check if the head has crashed or not? I was checking for any unusual sounds or vibrations but nothing out of ordinary.

Keep your cabinet open and try to see if the hard-drive hums while start-up OR you can place your fingers on it while boot-up you will sense the vibration if the drive spins up.

Also did not ask this earlier but have changed the power cable for the hard-drive too and what SMPS are you using. Cheerio!

I tried again and checked the vibration.
It spins for about 2 seconds while going into BIOS or loading Windows or Storage in compmgmt. Rest of the time it appears as if it is running on very low RPM. Still not showing up in BIOS & WINDOWS/Linux.
