Storage Solutions WD 500GB external hdd detection problem!

My friend has a wd 500gb external hdd which is having some problems,the hdd gets detected after 10-15 min after connecting o pc,after few minutes hdd shows the size of only 1 drive of 2,after opening the drive he can't copy anything,I/o error pops up,is there any way to backup the data?,hdd is in warranty but don't want rma it cause all the data will be lost so plz suggest some solution to copy the data.
 
Try running a disk scan from windows as soon as it gets detected.. Dont open it..Just go in properties and run scan and select automatically fix errors. Try and revert
 
Tried that i can see the data inside the drive but still can't copy the data,is there any software or trick to collect the data from the hdd?

Just a try from command prompt

Click on start ---> run ---> type "chkdsk X: /f" (no quotes) and replace X with whatever drive it is.

Also make sure drive is in NTFS format... If its FAT32 then it might not be able to copy file above 5.5gb (just thought of informing)
