Hello :)

Was planning to buy a 1Tb drive (WD 1tb green) but thought it would be better to buy a external drive as i'll be using it for only storing movies.

So let me know which one to choose - WD or seagate.

Preference - Reliability > Warranty > Performance

Also let me know the price of each as well.

bought the external seagate 1tb with separate power supply yesterday for 4900 from mumbai.

still running hdtune to test it.

Don't know about WD cost, but performance and reliability wise i prefer Seagate, as per my past experience.

I really don't trust the docks, My vantec dock just failed a month back and i have bad experience with 3rd party external enclosure too.
 
^Eeek, I think I should put my Vantec dock for sale then. Even Mano sir's dock busted a while back as he put it in a thread.

I'd pick up WD over Seagate - I do not quite trust Accel TBH with the disk replacement policies - got a refurb more than just a couple of times and failed. Had to resend them. :|
 
^Refurb for the external drives too ? Anyways went went the FreeAgent 1TB. Costed Rs.4800.
 
Useless seagate, failed the Short DST and Short Generic test in seatools. bah. (should have picked the WD :P)
 
^ wd has lots of issues too. the backup software they use mimeo is a pos. i was searching for reviews of wd external drive and came across a site where people were complaining about mimeo which stops backing up data all of a sudden and all such troubles.

also the wd drives have habit of conking off after around 7-8 months.

that year old thread is still alive and a person from the company still replies to problems there. latest reply (as of now) was 3rd Dec 2009.

seeing all that i got an internal drive. atleast there is chance of taking back data if drive thinks of failing in 1 year or so.

^Hopefully i'll be able to get another 1TB drive in another 2 month and back it up. Seagate failed me immediately and my friend also got his drive conking off within a week, considering that i feel a bit safe with WD. Besides been using a 500GB version for close to two years now.
 
Performance and quality wise I'd prefer WD over Seagate any day.

Although, Seagate does give 5 years of warranty over the 3 by WD, but their service is horrible, I gave my Seagate 250GB HDD for RMA, the hard disk was performing horribly and they returned it back as-is since it passed their "tests", I bought a new WD 640GB and I couldn't be more happier. I will giving the 250GB again for RMA.

The prices are very similar of the two, though WD is a tad more expensive. My friend bought an 1TB External, its been working pretty well till now, according to him. So in the end, the choice is yours mate.

What other brand is highly reliable for important data storage ?
 
A big plus for the WD Mybook, is that u can open the enclosure without voiding the warranty. There are lots of DIY articles on the internet for the same. When it comes to external drives, most often, its the electrical circuitry of the case that goes kaput.
HDD reliability wise, hard to tell, i suppose i wud simply buy and leave it to fate. Very recently i have bought a WD 1TB EADS internal drive and a Mybook Essential 1TB which has the same drive. My most valuable data is saved individually on both drives. Even the internal 1TB drive i bought is kept unplugged most of the time, plugged only for weekly backups.

So, mostly, if ur data is very important to you, keep a backup, its costly yes, but the peace of mind is worth every penny spent. More so, as the drives are very reasonably priced nowadays.
 
Two of my friends picked up Seagate Freeagent they crashed after the first week of purchase. One of them has a 1 Tb WD Essential Home that's 2yrs old and still working fine.
