Here is the situation,

A friend of mine owns 1 TB SATA WD HDD purchased just 2 months back. It was major backup medium with lots of data. (Docs, pdf, photos, movies, songs).

By mistake this 1 TB HDD was formatted & new windows XP was installed over it. It was purely a SATA cable connecting mistake. HDD was formatted for 20 GB just to install Win XP over it & he realized his mistake as soon as he opened Disk management & found whole 1 TB got formatted. Disk space apart from 20 GB is still in RAW format & he didn’t format with NTFS fear of losing all of the data during recovery.

No data recovery tool is run on the system & space other then 20 GB is not used at all. In fact HDD was never booted after the mistake. HDD is brand new (2 months old) & working in perfect condition so I don’t see any use of opening the HDD/changing platter or motor etc. Sadly WD don't provide any data recovery services. 1 TB HDD had around 200-300 GB of data only which needs to be recovered. Remaining HDD is empty.

He checked out sites & reading feed back about different data recovery vendors. It seems vendors like Stellar is really costly & charges a bomb (30000+) for HDD of 1 TB. We tried to tell them its just 200 GB of data not 1 TB which needs to be recovered & there is no need to open HDD at all, its just recovery. but still they don't budge.

Can anyone suggest good data recovery person/company in Bangalore? Please post your real life experience. We DO NOT want to recover data with tools like Recuva etc at home which might mess up whole thing & possibility of data recovery after running 4-5 diff tools.

Is it advisable to replace the WD HDD with new HDD after data recovery? Does normal data recovery process puts lots of wear & tear on platter/bad sectors?

Please suggest.

Use Getdata back for NTFS (software) which will work for sure and get your precious data except for the overwritten data (20 GB).

i faced the same situation once and was really in soup... I gave the hdd to steller and they quoted around 6k and i gave it to them and they could not do much about it

As last resort i tried out EasyRecovery Pro and even my 1GB Outlook PST were recovered and more than 99% of my precious data

Give it a try , it worked for me !!!

i have used getdataback NTFS and FAT on more than 4-5 occasions and would recommend using it, rather than going for data recovery vendors.

but u will not get the 20gb data, over written by windows in any case.

I would suggest first taking a backup Image of your HDD, so that even any software messes up while recovery, you still have a means to get your data back

Go use RStudio NTFS, should help you recover maximum data. takes a hell lot of time.

If thats not successful, you should get Encase, thats a tool that will take even more time, but recover data thought lost.

Stellar should be your last option.

for data to be recovered by get data back... you probably will have to do a quick format to NTFS of that drive

also.. you will need one more hdd to store all that data...you can not recover and restore the data on the same drive...that will result in permanent data loss during the recovery course itself.

get data back for NTFS worked fine for me.

+1 for GDB
it never let me down and have alomost 100% accuracy provided you dont fiddle with the current disk state.

also try Stellar...its too ma favourite and guarantees as GDB.

@Uniquemods: the overwritten 20gb data can be seen at step 4 of recovery where gdb shows the various previous data states. And yes it can recover it. :)

use another harddisk esp. external ones to dump the recovered data.

getbackdata-ntfs works the best .. or try Data Storage Solutions-RMV-2nd stage .. u can get theor number from Just dial service..

Thank you everyone for advice.

@Gaurish

I can not purchase one more 1 TB HDD & do data recovery at home. So we will prefer to give to recovery vendor.

I know there are plenty of softwares like GBD, Recuva etc but I dont want to mess around data & loose in all trial & error things.

I do not think I will go with Stellar guys coz of huge charges.

1 Q - If there is no physical damage to HDD & it was just formatted due to mistake, Is there any need to do RMA after data recovery process ?

Do you guys think normal data recovery process (Not opening HDD) will damage HDD that it needs RMA ?

buy a 1 TB, recover your data and then sell it here.. I'm sure people will buy it for 400-500 buks lesser then the original price.. seems cheaper way.

Can anyone give their opinion on this ?

No and No.

Remember, its formatted and not damaged. The HDD is working fine and has absolutely no issues with it, thats what I get from this post.

I don't think normal data recovery process will damage the HDD either, when in this case in fact it is possible to get the data recovered via software itself.

DO NOT GO FOR DATA STORAGE SOLUTIONS>> Sudheer is a cheat.. After 2 long months he gave me a crap hard disk claiming tat .. "It has come from Seagate."

They work efficiently... but don pay them until and unless you are satisfied... with your data (recovered) and the condition of hard disk

@Hemant,

Sad to know that. I have got good feedback about Data solutions from diabloReigns.

Can you please tell what problem did you face with Sudheer ?

Any feedbacks on RAGA DATA SOLUTIONS on Cunningham Rd ?

There are two things here. Data Solutions (Sudheer) does recover the data, but there is no guarantee as such. The point is , as soon as he gives the data recovered, immediately copy it to another storage device, cos once the Data Storage guy leaves your place with the money, the drive could go bad and Sudheer will not take any responsibility of it.

So, 1, data is recovered. 2, do not trust him otherwise with the drives etc.

Thank you.

In my case, HDD is working fine so he just needs to recover data.

Once he recovers data in his HDD, can I format my HDD & dump the data to my HDD from his HDD as there is no physical damage to my HDD ? What you all suggest ?
