Is it possible to use a WD 1TB NAS HDD ( white one ) as a plain vanilla USB storage device ??

I have got one from a friend & was curious if it would work like that & what has to be done for it to work like that.

I dont know why but when i connect one WD NAs it is not recognised as an Extrenal device. Is there any software I have to install with that ??

Simple suggestion? Sell it off and buy a USB disk. You can probably buy two for the money you will get ;)

If it is the WD world Edition drives, I think the USB port on its back is to be used for storage expansion.

it should work on usb port....you should also know that you can run torrent clients on it without turning on your pc..

disconnect device ...restart computer.... first power up storage device and let the disk spin up 1 min or so ...then connect the usb wire to nas storage and then the other end to the computer... let me know if it worked

Nah man did not work. But thanks for thinking about it.

A noob question - Do i have to install some software before connecting it to PC ?

PS - Thinking of getting a new internal 1TB instead now.

Space is such a crunch now that we have HD movies coming left right & centre.

Yeah sell 1 TB drive & get some 32 GB flash drives ! Now thats funny ...... not.

Not really. What I meant was, a NAS would probably fetch you something like 6-7k or more with the drive included? Just sell that and get a normal USB 1Tb drive :P And you ll probably still have cash left over :)

Nopes

It won't

the USB port is for adding external USB drives to expand the storage

On a side note, there'll be enough folks ready to grab it if you want to sell it off for a USB dr5ive ;)

Actually its not mine , it belongs to a friend who was thnking of selling it to me for 7k , it is around 6 months old & i guess never used as he doesnt know how to connect it.

you just hook it to a router..that's all there is to it

For quicker access from other machines ,you may want to add the share as a mapped network drive though

Then just get a cheap switch (<1k?) and hook it up through the ethernet :)

Cheaper to buy a brand new external 1Tb USB HDD though. Its almost same price / cheaper + you ll get full warranty on it as well.
