Yesterday I got a 500GB WD Passport drive... of course, it's nice and shiny but it also comes loaded with a Virtual CD full of certain programs that allow encryption, backup etc.

I have no intention to use any of these programs but I found that I can't remove VCD (it's on some hidden partition) and free the space that it takes.

How do you folks (those who own Passports) deal with this WD virtual CD?

I have owned 2 WD passport drives, 120gb and 320gb....120gb with my brother now...but I havent come across any hidden partition or Virtual CD on either of them...it did have some software, if I remember it right, but nothing like huge...

How long is it since you've been owning the drives? WD has started shipping the newer Passports and MyBooks with this bloatware. AFAIK the WD Elements does not come with this useless utility.

Besides, morgoth note that you CANNOT get back that 500MB odd space reserved.

Been over 3yr since I bought the 120GB drive and the 320GB drive was bought in July 2008...

WD has released a new f/w a couple of months back. Download it, and update the firmware first. Next, download the VCD Manager and run the application and disable it.

Pretty annoying I must add! :P

Instructions and download links here

Apparently, in newer drives Western Digital includes VCD manager on virtual CD. At least I found one in my drive and in newer drives there is no need to update firmware. I simply ran VCD Manager and the virtual CD disappeared.

Also, JFI if someone gets an error saying driver for WD SES Drive USB.... is not installed, manually install the driver. It's there in Extras folder on virtual CD.

Thanks you Gannu for the tip nonetheless.
