The newly leaked WD TV-2 adds in network playback over the new Ethernet jack, DTS audio decoding, and a component video plug for folks caught in the technological no man's land between composite and HDMI.

This is just awesome news

Electric Echoes: WD TV-2

I think the key feature to note is "Network capable for easy access to the newest content from PCs, network drives, internet favorites"

WDTV1 looks much better..

Besides custom firmware enables all these features..Only reason to really look forward to it is if there is any change in the internal sigma chip or if they increased the ram substantially..

Through custom firmware you can

1) play from usb dvd drive

2) get network access using select usb network dongle

3) get network access using select wifi dongle

4) run many other apps too

1) good.
2) pointless. Too much hassle to source "select" dongle.
3) Ditto ^^. + wi-fi for HD is pretty crappy.
4) good.

I might also like to add, how does WD1 still look better considering network etc. is now inbuilt and that custom firmware should also be available for the WD2? Don't even get me started on the DTS decoding. That by itself would make my life a lot easier (some of my pals don't have spkrs supporting DTS and guess who they bring there files to transcode ;) ? ).

As an aside, I wonder how many folks have the expertise and time to mess around with custom firmwares when all they bought was a simple HD media player...

Will i be able to use a 5.1 channel sound system connected to this WDTV ???

PS: I cannot see any pics there. I see that the pics are being linked to a blogspot link but blogspot is not blocked in my office :S

there are quite a few dongles supported for lan..Wifi is picky though..

Yeah what do your friends use to decode dts?

I have one question, if i have 5.1 audio in ac3, will wd player be able to decode it?

They don't. They make me transcode the DTS to AC3 :P. No idea about 5.1 audio. The ones who want the sound already have the hardware and the rest use crappy HT systems. Personally, I don't like out of the box soultions much so don't own a WDTV. In fact the only TV in my home is still a 21" :P. Going to get a 40" in a few days as I'm almost finished with my HTPC :ohyeah:!

i know it can decode ac3
Can it specifically decode 5.1ch surround in ac3?
How to connect surround speakers to it?

Nope, as it doesn't have a 5.1 analogue out. Either use composite or use optical out into a receiver.

support for USB optical drive and networking is welcome and worthy change/ enhancement for early adopters of WDTV..... wanted these features from the beginning only from company (at least firmware support)
