hi ppl,

The worst just happened! my worst nightmare came true. my precious wd 500GB HDD fell from a table and now its not even recognized by the bios.

No OS in the hdd, just data.

When the hdd is connected, the system takes longer to get off the bios screen.
If i go close to the hdd, i can hear click-clak sound from the hdd.

Any thing that i can do to get back the data???

Sorry for your loss man. Same thing happened to my Hitachi HDD. Felt really bad...like kicking myself cuz it was a totally avoidable accident.

There's probably not much you can do. I put mine in the freezer for 8 hrs to try and revive it. Didn't work.

If you try the same thing, make sure you clean the HDD good before giving it for RMA. And don't mention what happened. Just say it stopped working(WD ought to take liability for these things...what abt their patented shockguard and all that marketing hype??).

I hope...I really hope you had a backup of your data.

thanks for the repy guys ......

@sydras no backup!!:(

In fact few days back had transferred more data from my other HDDs fearing they might crash.

I will try some stuff to get the HDD to be detected, before sending it for RMA.

Was it powered when it fell off?

This is getting to be a common trend nowadays. Ppl not having a backup plan. Guys...at least use DVDs and back up your favourite apps, games and stuff. HDDs are not at all reliable and can fail at any time even without such an incident occuring.
Not worth going back to the stone age when such a thing happens by any means.

There is a video given in the PC WORLD dvd few months back showing how to get back the HDD (few tricks that may or may not work). If u get that video follow it.
It also contains the freezing technique.Let me know if u got that Videos otherwise i will try to upload it for u:hap2:
Good luck dude.

If you can
1)get it detected by the BIOS
2) have free space on another drive,
3) Used a good recovery program like GetBackDataForNTFS

you maybe able to recover some data. Has the freeze method worked for anybody on this forum? Anyone else care to give ideas on how to attempt data recovery.

the freeze methord might be the best option he has

or else there is the hairdryer method and hit it with a hammer methord and punch it really hard methord

Odd as it may sound, it has been reported that giving it a rap on the top has worked for some. I tried this with my HDD...no luck. Anyway, what've you got to lose.

Again, was it powered off when it fell? I'm trying to gauge the shock tolerance of the HDD. Mine was powered on. HDD has much better shock tolerance when off. So ideally, you should not have a problem with a drop with a powered down HDD.

well but i don't believe that WD HDDs t so fragile i mean one drop and kaput

i have an old 320GB IDE WD HDD

i've accidently droped it mant times but noothing

same with my toshiba 2.5"

I've also dropped my WD 2.5 inch laptop HDD. Nasty fall from a little more than waist height with a lot of noise. But it was powered off. So it never had a problem. Still using it today without any issues.

My Hitachi 3.5 inch HDD fell from less that a foot of height but it was powered. It went kaput with multiple seek noises(I guess) but no detection in XP or BIOS.

but in my case both the HDDs were powerd when they fell from a table top

but he has a better chance of recovering the data when he freezes the HDD

Thanks for the reply guys ......

The HDD was not powered when it fell.

It slipped and fell at an angle on its side or edge.

The problem is its not detected by bios.

I tried MHDD bootable cd, where it did show that a HDD is connected to the system, but no information about it. It showed the capacity as 0. It was not able to access any info from the HDD.

Nways i till try that software.

will try the freezer option, when i finish trying other options, rest of them seem scary and might effect RMA.

Can try punching though ...........
