Hi peeps,
I am helping a philanthorpic organisation set up a webcast of their discourses on Indian philosophy.
(Truly helping 'em-free of cost).

They're already doing hit and miss kind of stuff on a free site.
So I wuz wondering if u pros could tell me :-

1- how do i get the best webcast in terms of live casts- ie
a)-the tech on the webcasting laptop- GBs RAM, Config etc.
and b ) The tech on the webcam - right now they have a 1.4 megapixel logitech that someone's given them.

2- the necessary bandwidth etc for a superior unbroken flv upload.

3- Any related stuff- eg- we just discovered a proggy called Adobe Flash Encoder that actually improves the video and audio- But unfortunately this proggy keeps hanging every once in a while.
(They have a core 2 duo- 1 GB RAM Compaq).

Some solns I'm advising-
1)I'm telling them to go in for a 4 GB RAM laptop .(Someone told me that for upload the GFX card- NVIDEA mebbe was important. Bt I argue that since its an upload and not playback of the live feed, the RAM will give smooth play rather than hang.
2) I also asked them to get a 2MB line from the provider.
However the 2 MB line form MTNL might not give them 2MB upload speeds.
Any help from u pros will help the cause of Indian Philosophy.
:)

All that is shit,

Get a good web cam preferably 2mpxl, start broadcasting on yahhoo web cam:P

There are many live cam, confrencing serves out there..

For youtube, record with the webcam/ normal camcorder, and upload the file to youtube..

You dont need a new laptop for webcasting ..sheesh..

Also remember, what you upload is going to watched by someone too, so maybe you'l arrange a 2mbpsline but the watcher may not have such bandwidth..

hey thanks party monger,
but the adobe thingy really helped- the vid is now really good..
-also if the RAM is bigger on the laptop, wouldnt the pc not pack up for bigger files-say 2 hours of webcast?

No, while encoding, everything is written on to the hdd instantly, you dont need much ram, 1gb is fine..

party monger is rite.....u don't really need to spend on a RAM.
If u really feel the need to buy something then go for a better WebCam. I heard logitech announced some 7 new webcams earlier this week.

Here's the link.

Two things u can do are
1) If the webcast are going to be uploaded once and viewed many times then ur ok with any internet connection (e.g. youtube).
2) If its a live broadcast then it largely depends on the Viewer's internet speed and the number of viewers afaik. If ur facing issues with the latter then u can upgrade to a 2megs connection.

Ustream.tv

Best site for free webcasts. The screen resolution is not great but the service is awesome for the features they provide. And you dont even need anything other than a webcam and decent internet. Just create a channel, give the link to friends and your are ready to broadcast.

Thanks for the help -Head, Benny, Party -

It is on Ustream as a live stream . They have a 6mb cam from I-ball now. But if viewers are around 400, will that b a problem?
Right now there r 150 and the webcast keeps breaking off.
Then they struggle to get online again.
The line is a MTNL -upto 2MB line.
Any ides if there's a better option.
They have the PHOTOn- but thewireless suucks in that area.
Any tips will be appreciated by all of us at the institute.

Still not having great succes at USTream, or Live stream.
Is this becos of the line?
Any tutorials or pro knowledge?
The upload keeps going off when it's "live".
