Weird Keyboard issue after installing Windows 7

I just installed windows 7 on my Toshiba satellite laptop. In this laptop each of the numeric keys have the standard characters like !@#$%^&* and we expect that when we press SHIFT + 2, @ should be displayed but it is not happening. I am getting another character here, this character is also printed over the number 2 in this keyboard.

Below is the actual pic of my keyboard and see the numbers 2,3, they have the " and £ signs in RED there. I get those characters when in use SHIFT + number

How do i restore this to normal layout ??
Using on screen keyboards also do not help as it shows the same as follows

^Check if any of the function keys have a lock symbol with the number 1 inside it. That indicates the Num Lock key.

^^Yes F1 does have a lock symbol but no digit inside. I will try that and report back later on. Currently while trying to connect BSNL 3G connection i got some BSOD error which mentioned something related to USB driver.

Then computer shutdown and upon restart just a DOS cursor was blinking and the computer refused to proceed. No F8 etc worked. Now sure what happened.

So i am reinstalling windows 7 again and then will check and report back. But this time while installing i have ensured that the keyboard type in setup is selected as Canadian Multilingual instead of US and see if it works.

This is really weird.. I've "@" symbol on numeric key [2] ..

i see "@" symbol above the shift key on your onscreen keyboard..is this symbols at the same place on your laptop keyboard too?

^Same here on my netbook. Seems like the default input language is not set right on his KB. Mine is English US.

Rakshit, try changing that option. It is in Control Panel.

Ok so i have reinstalled windows 7 after that issue and now i had chosen the default Keyboard as canadian multilingual and the SHIFT+NUMBER thing is fine you see from the below screenshot.

But now from the screenshot if you observe the keys beside enter and up arrow are some weird characters (like the é in café). Can anyone tell me how do i delete the current canadian keyboard and get the standard US keyboard. I can live with couple of keys not working as expected but not this. I think this can be done from the regional settings from control panel.

Keyboard settings issue.I had the same exact problem with my Toshiba Satellite as well.I have no clue how i fixed it :ashamed:. Give me a days time will dig around and help you.

Edit 1: Did you install the drivers,Windows 7 natively installs all of them but did you try installing from Toshiba site as well.

Try keyboard to English US ??.

Edit 2: Here's how you delete the Canadian keyboard

Control Panel--->Regional & Language--->Keyboard & Languages--->change keyboards--->hit add and add English US once thats set it to default and you can remove the Canadian one.

^^Done now. Deleted the canadian multilingual and activated the normal english under ENGLISH (Canada) from keyboard settings and it worked :)

Now fingers crossed that the shutdown issue does not occur. I am not able to open the laptop myself inspite of removing each and every screw from its bottom and I am not trying hard as it can cause physical damage. Any way i can clean dust from outside, like use blower of standard vacuum cleaner :ashamed:

change your keyboard to US English.
Go to control panel -> select clock, language and region -> select change keyboards and other inputs -> click change keyboards -> click Add -> select English(US) -> tick the keyboard checkbox
and set it is as default(move up) along with language and you are done.

Here is the link as to how to open up a Toshiba Satellite laptop not sure what is your model number Disassembly guide for Toshiba Laptops.

You can clean it from outside but it will not be effective, even i suffered from heating issues luckily laptop was with in warranty got it cleaned @ so called Toshiba/HCL service center( I had to give the service center folks the guide as to how to open it.

My suggestion remove the proccy clean it up and apply thermal compound and put it back all together, if the laptop doesn't turn up dump it in the toilet and flush it :P.Just kidding best bet take help of some one and do it the carefully coz even if you miss one screw it can mess up the laptop.
