When I'm installing something from my DVD-RW drive, or copying something...
Music playing on teh PC starts stuttering, the mouse starts lagging until the installation/transfer is complete.
This was not like this always, what could be the problem?
Am I right to suspect that teh cable which connects the drive to teh mobo and other stuff is bad ?

Do check if DMA is enabled.. u'll find it in Device Manager>IDE Controllers>Primary (Secondary) channel.. if u have "Let Bios decide Transfer MOde" checked, uncheck it and restart.

Thanks, the secondary channel was set to PIO only...

EDIT: I rebooted, though the option is DMA If Available, the current transfer mode is still displayed as PIO Only.
I wanted to check out the BIOS settings, but the BIOS is password protected and I can't seem to remember the password. So teh question now is how do I reset the BIOS Password? :D

simple reset the CMOS. There must be a jumper on board or simply remove CMOS battery and put it back in. It will reset the bios along with the password.

uninstall the drives channel in device manager - in your case the secondary channel - and reboot and when XP retarts it reinstalls the removed channel and it should come back set as DMA mode.

Try this and see if it corrects the problem - it is possible that the channel maybe set as PIO in the BIOS.
