weird problem

hi everyone,
i got a weird problem with my pc yesterday. i started it normally and was browsing the net when all of a sudden it hanged. after a few minutes when it did not respond to ctr-alt -del i pressed the reboot switch. Problem starts from here: after pressing the switch i get cmos checksum error? i thought battery failed and so replaced it with a similar spare i had. but comp refuses to even boot up. no error beeps, no indication of anything wrong. then i put the old battery and the comp starts working loads windows, and windows loads its driver database. Then it hangs again in one - two minutes.

same thing happens again and again. windows loads and hangs within 1 min of starting. but i dont get cmos checksum error, why?

pc is quite old - 7yrs antique machine but still works.
os- win me, proc- celeron 300A, ram -256mb, bios- award.

thanks in advance

give the baby two bangs on the top will work like a charm. Make sure u switch off the power supply, i know it sounds crazy but works for me everytime.

PS: I am not responsible for the consequences.

A more sensible method will be to check the wiring inside the cabby and see if all the IDE cables are tightly fixed and give it some vaccum cleaning(in blower mode). Sometimes dust causes lot of problems.

I have read that vacuuming inside the case should be done with care as the rapid air movement causes a lot of static electricity which can zap electronics. I read that the plastic tip of the vacuum hose carries positive charges which when it comes in contact with chips can kill them - a suggestion was that you should wrap the vacuum hoses tip with a piece of heavy card paper so that the static elctricity charges are kept away from contacting parts.

Hmmm thats news. Some googling brought this up -

“Powder flowing in one direction through a plastic vacuum-cleaning hose can create a significant static electric charge. Plus, there is the possibility that there may be a static electricity build-up on the powder coating deposits. If a charged ungrounded hose used to vacuum overspray powder were to contact an object that was grounded, the static electricity could then arc and trigger a violent explosion.”
This article could be useful -
PC Maintenance
This article explains preventative computer maintenance relating to the accumulated dust and grime in your computer. Preventive maintenance helps avoid overheating, random crashes, lock-up, and component failure, and can save you money in the long run.

Another thing to be careful about is the low humidity levels during winter - I have a Hygrometer next to my Computer and a few days back the humidity in Mumbai was around 35% - this low level of humidity can create a lot of problems caused by static electricty flowing thru our bodies to the computer. All you need to do is wear leather shoes and walk across a carpeted room and touch the inside of the computer case and .....Z-A-P !!! :O

Hey thanks everyone, problem solved!

i opened the pc - saw quite a lot of dust in it + some spiders web. so after dusting it all off i started it in safe mode (which i did not try earlier). it worked so i shut it down normally and after starting it again it seems to work fine now. maybe computers don't like dust and spiders.

i'll have to remember to clean my comp every 2-3 months from now on i guess. :-)

also zhopudey's article was quite informative. thanks a lot.
