Weird Windows 7 & Vista connectivity issue

My home network setup is as follows:

The main PC is connected to a wired broadband connection. I've got a Belkin wireless router for sharing the connection wirelessly. There are 2 laptops in the house. One is the ASUS EeePC which is running the default customised version of Linux it came with. The other is my dad's Dell laptop which is running Vista.

The problem is as follows. I've been able to share the internet and both the laptops and even the iPod Touch is able to access the net. So far, so good. When it comes to sharing files, there seems to be some stupid problem. I can see the main PC on the EeePC and even run and copy files off it, but it is not visible on the Vista laptop.

DHCP is on in the router. When I go to Network on the Dell laptop, I can only see the laptop and Belkin router. I've tried all the basic steps:

* Turn on network discovery on the laptop. On the windows 7 running main PC, it keeps turning off itself :(
* Turned off firewall.

Any suggestions? Really getting bugging now :(

Okay, after fiddling around a bit, the main PC is visible now. But still can't seem to access it. Network path not found! :(

have you added priviledges to "everyone" on shared folders. ifelse only users with same name and password wud be able to access even on a n/w pc.

^Yeah, done that. I'm sure because the EeePC is able to access the files without any problems. Does this imply that the problem is in the config of the laptop running Vista? Because if the Linux lappy can access the files, it means that they are shared properly, doesn't it? :S

I use mapped drives to access my main Vista machine from my Aspire One. Try that out.. it might work. Try turninig ON the Vista and 7 firewall and put exceptions for File and Printer sharing that is all that is needed...

I'm sharing files between my laptop(Win7/Ubuntu) and desktop(Vista SP2/Fedora). Just make sure that in both Vista and Windows 7 machine, the Network Discovery, File Sharing, Public Folder sharing and all other things are set to ON and have been configured.

Rest is to check the sharing privileges and permissions on the Vista and Windows 7 machine.

BTW, why do u rely on DHCP for a small network. Shiftin' to Static IP scheme will allow u to manage ur small home network in more better way. Just my 2 cents.

+1
im too using manual ip assigning for my n/w at home, running 3 PCs.
And mapping works gr8, unless the other system is offline, else it wud search for the mapped locations and slows down for some 10 sec every time u access the location containg the mapped drives.

I never really gave this DHCP v/s static IP much thought before. Okay , will try out with the static IP setup and report back here again.

Alright, spend so many days trying to figure out the issue. Today, just tried typing in the IP address (of my desktop) into the run command on the Vista laptop. And voila! It opened right away! Then again I tried opening the desktop PC via the "Network" and it didn't open.

So, for some funny reason, it only opens when I type in the IP address of my PC. Any idea why that may be happening?

PS: Mapped the folders that I need to access for now.
