Just spoke to one of the personnel in WD. I'll put up the official news pretty soon. Western Digital acquired Hitachi Storage solutions.

Edit: Yup

Under the terms of the agreement, WD will acquire Hitachi GST for $3.5 billion in cash and 25 million WD common shares valued at $750 million, based on a WD closing stock price of $30.01 as of March 4, 2011.

The acquisition of Hitachi GST is a unique opportunity for WD to create further value for our customers, stockholders, employees, suppliers and the communities in which we operate,” said John Coyne, president and chief executive officer of WD. “We believe this step will result in several key benefits¾enhanced R&D capabilities, innovation and expansion of a rich product portfolio, comprehensive market coverage and scale that will enhance our cost structure and ability to compete in a dynamic marketplace. The skills and contributions of both workforces were key considerations in assessing this compelling opportunity. We will be relying on the proven integration capabilities of both companies to assure the ongoing satisfaction of our customers and to bring this combination to successful fruition

Hitachi drives had the best logitivity and lesser failure rates compared to WD and Seagate. Specially the new WD and Seagate drives having lots of RMA.

God knows what will happen to the quality. Will it improve or decrease.

Lets hope that WD takes up Hitachi`s manufacturing practice/techniques and brings out more reliable drives.

I still have 250gb+500gb Hitachi deskstars , running awesomely since 4-4.5 years.

The 250 one is still my boot drive at home; much faster than 7200.12 .

Hitachi's ASS is what always held me back from buying one of these drives. Although the thought is a bit naive, i hope WD's reliability problems and Hitachi's ASS problems are both nicked off after this.

Don't judge a dinner before its served. Its way too early to say anything. Besides, so much cash is involved did keep RnD in mind when they acquired it. Service is a different thing altogether that one needs to wait and watch.

^^ That is precisely the reason why I dont know whether to be happy or sad with this news. :S

Thats a great news and hoping that the two companies which are now one will share best practices to make better drives . Tough competition for Seagate .

So r we gonna see raptor running @ 15k/rpm in the future . Raptor meets the ultra-star .

Now this is some news.
So will WD make the new HDD's as compared to the earlier reliable Hitachi HDD's or will they degarde these Hitachi drives too.
Only time will tell.
Lets hope they dont screw this up.
