My friend wants to get a camera for regular use (non-professional). Does not have any specifications but only budget. But after talking to him from experience (I have a Canon S2IS), we have come up with a list of specs. Budget is strictly fixed at less than 16K

1. Need a wide angle rather than those tele prosumers. I have a S2 and even though it's a great camera in all ways, it's a let down when clicking those family function photographs inside the house. I would trade it with a wide angle (<24mm at least) any day

2. We need a camera which has manual controls too so that he can learn experimenting and maybe upgrading to a DSLR after 2-3 yrs. Any cam having Av/Tv/Manual mode would be fine for this.

3. It should have optical image stabilization (not the ones which call high ISOs as IS)

4. Less noise at high ISO + good low light shooting

5. Face recognition would be nice.

If you can make do with grey market, then get the Panny TZ-15

1. It has a 28mm starting focal length so its wider than most cameras.

2. It has all the regular P,A,S,M manual modes for you to play with.

3. ALL Panasonic cameras come with O.I.S (Optical Image Stabalization)

4. Very few cams allow you to bump the ISO to anything above ISO 400 without getting horrible noise and this camera is not one of them.

5. Yup, face detection is there ! :)

^^in that price range, all the wide angles belong to panny

and their offerings are better compared to the nikon/canon cans in the range you mention

Well JJMehta quotes gray prices, doesn't it? They have it listed as 22990 (with 2GB card) on their site. That's way out of our budget. How's the TZ11? Unfortunately it's not listed on dpreview and hence I am not quite sure about it being one of those outdated models

tz11 is the same as tz4 . they are just launched in different countries with different names.

the only difference betweeen tz15 and tz11 is that tz15 has a bigger screen and has HD video shooting capabilities. rest all is same.

tz15 is a great camera( i got it a month ago ) but it doesnt have manual controls and no camera will give you good picture quality above ISO 400 in your budget.

fujifilm cameras have some very good sensors but they dont have that good an image stabilisation sysytem and no wide angle.

in wide angle you should look at panasonics...they are the only ones you can get in your budget. tz11/tz4 , tz15/tz5 , fz18

you will have to compromise on some of the points you mentioned. you have to decide what is more important for you.
