I have seen that filling the ink cartridges with the syringe is cumbersome and the print quality degrades plus the life does not gets extended by much.

I know about ink tank printers but they are big and expensive upfront. For someone who takes 10 prints a month (and lives in small flats), they may not be ideal.

So what do we do with empty printer cartridges. Like the one here.

Quality of aftermarket inks will never compare with new OEM cartridges. So it is a question of compromise on cost vs quality. Canon offers Small, Medium and Large versions of cartridges for many of their printers, so perhaps go with the Small one if not printing much.
Some adventurous folks will set up CISS like this -

I bought this kit for my HP printer years back but never got to install or use it. I got fed up of the printer ink drying in the cartridge after 2-3 months. I ended up throwing the printer away (in junk/raddhi) and i still have the kit inside some box lying somewhere. I think I bought the kit for close to 1.5k too so lot of money waste. These inkjet printers are a waste of money no matter what we do.

So just throw this off in the dustbin. For some reason I always feel weird throwing such high quality plastic in trash. There must be a better way to recycle these.

Buy a laser printer if you don't need colored prints. As long as you keep it in a dry place, it will last for 10 years or more even if you print a page a month or 6 months.
