What do you think of present India's broadband scene?

It's been 5 months since we are getting some more cheaper and faster Internet, All thanks to mass roll out of Jio fiber!

So present plans among majority of the operators are as follows with 3.3TB FUP, while BSNL offers 4TB of FUP on some plans:
  • 30/40Mbps - 399/499
  • 100Mbps - 799
  • 200Mbps - 999
  • 300Mbps - 1499
  • 1Gbps - 3999

We all can agree that 3300GB of data is a lot of data for majority of us. (https://techenclave.com/threads/what-is-your-monthly-usage-wired-broadband.194251/)

I recently stumbled upon 50Mbps article (50Mbps unlimited internet at Rs. 5 per day) - What? 150₹/month?


I was thinking if the rates of plans should still drop, Considering the rates have fallen and mass adoption is going on!
Why can't be become another South korea or Romania in terms of Broadband Internet?

300Mbps should be priced under ₹1000 and 500Mbps under ₹1500.. 1Gbps within 2500₹ with present FUP's! I know it's possible.. What do you think?

50 Mbps up down truly unlimited no fup 550 per month . Via cable operator . No sites blocked or opera VPN circumvents the site ban ... I don't know . Fibre to home . Connect to modem via gpon . Absolutely no down time .
Mtnl ADSL I have is absolutely crap ... Down most of the time . 5mbps up and 768kbps down . Some 600 per month absolutely useless . Must disconnect ....soon .
Other home ... 500 pm 60mbps but only 60 gb fup . Just better than Mtnl ... Down a few times a month . Lan to home . Cable operator .

I've been using excitel from last 3 months. Paid for 6 months in advanced for 100 mbps plan and effective monthly cost came d own to 578/- per month, which I find really good price.
Connectivity wise, I get 1-2 disconnections in a month That too gets resolved within minutes after informing the local provider. Ping to excitel delhi server is 7-9 ms.

300 mbps plan also comes effectively under 800/- per month when you pay for 6 months or 12 months in advance.
 
Do you know of any other ISP in the offing who is planning to hit the market to counter Jio fiber?

The market is already frozen badly like the web hosting.
 
Recently I visited a relative. Their ISP (FTTH) had Natted IP. I mean is this common to not assign public IP for ISPs?
Are there any regulations?

Due to final depletion of IPv4 most of the providers are providing Natted IP. If you require a Static IP, you need to pay monies.

In 1-2 years we can get Static IPv6, I guess Jio provides one!
 
A few months earlier I was paying 1100 (including taxes and modem rent) for 50 mbps 600 GB on BSNL fiber plan and now I am paying 800 for 60 mbps 3300 GB . There is no competition for BSNL at my location, there is no JIO or Airtel fiber still bsnl is providing good service even in villages and small towns. May be it is getting ready for JIO fiber. It took about 4-5 years for BSNL to move from 256 kbps to 512 kbps while in next 4-5 years, BSNL jumped from 512 kbps to 100 mbps while charging nearly the same money. Future definitely looks high speed at a great price.
 
Jio/hathway

offer big packages at CHEAP price.. once user subscribed for... then they will start providing 10% to 20% of actual promise and make you feel that any how you paid High for Low package

Been using surround net a local provider and then airtel for past 4 months

Both 300 mbps unlimited.. Around 1k

Am thrilled with the scene of broadband in India or at least here in bangalore... If this continues I'll be happy with my life... If it improves it will be an unexpected bonus
 
Can't be South Korea or Romania because people are stupid with no common sense. There are still discussion taking place every now and then why people use broadband when Jio Bholte is there. I used to reply from time to time but morons don't deserve any replies.

Current situation regarding broadband is very good. I just wish ISPs focused on Quality of Service more instead of raw speed, i.e lower latency/ better throughout. Routing quality is of utmost importance.

Right now fairly happy with Hathway 50 Mbps connection at 708 PM, initially it was 500 GB PM, but later they upgraded it to Unlimited (as per their notification). Especially after coming from Alliance broadband which was managed by an LLCO (Low Life Cable Operator) in my place, this is so many miles better. My validity will expire mid March. May think for BSNL then, however have only heard mixed feedback from users regarding ping to gaming servers. If airtel were available I would move to them straight away. Jio may be available but i don't think their latency would be any better than Hathway's as they both use same backend, or so I'm told.

you could use Iperf via cli and jperf via javabased GUi , and there are some common opensource iperf servers which will give you accurate speeds
my personal opinion is that in the past 20 years we have made unprecedented progress ,from those 56kilobit internet to the 4g and ftth availability . Real thing is not all of your speed is true speed all of it is cached data. but than you are getting it ...

Yes true, bandwidth isn't everything.
 
I love how cheap broadband is. We recently downgraded from ACT 200mbps to Airtel 40mbps. The monthly cost came down to Rs. 570 from Rs. 1400. Even this connection is good enough for client calls, working on VPN, streaming 4k on Youtube. This is amazing value for money IMHO.

I guess what we need right now is more availability of quality service and bigger players to reach tier 2 cities.

actually all the video streaming sites speed is a scam ,dont judge you speed ,latency etc by testing popular sites as most of them is google peering or uses internet exchange (not incorrent or wrong ) but not the correct parameter to test your internet
 
Finally consistency with Jio. Connections which don't break. After 20 years of suffering some respite.

Life is good.
