!! What exactly is Usenet / Newsgroups ??

Hey guys,

Can anyone please explain what actually this Usenet/ Newsgroups thing is..!! Well i tried to google it and even check the page from Wiki. But it seems they have oversimplified it (i guess) so i couldnt understand it.

So can anyone explain it to me in layman's terms..!! whats the use/ advantage of Usenet is. And how is it compared to Bittorrent, why is it considered better than Bittorrent.

Can we use Usenet on our ISPs (i am browsing through Airtel GPRS). Any extra info clearing this doubt is welcomed. :)

usenet / newsgroup is a very old form of a discussion groups. it was created to exchange news so 'newsgroup'. you join up a group you intrested in , post discuss with everyone else who has joined the group ( like yahoo groups if you have used them )
there are free groups & paid version also.

nowdays they are used for downloading like p2p. people upload their files & you can then download them at http speeds. thats the main advantage. these are generally paid newsgroups where you pay a certain fee to access the group. there are many free groups where this is possible but its a big hassle. you can access the groups with usnet readers which are free or Ms outlook.

most of the scene releases of audio , games etc first appear on newsgroup than on torrents.

i used to use them before on vsnl & even sometime back on my local isp before torrents became popular. never had any problem with isp blockage. i think its more of an issue internationally like how our isps block p2p softwares. since hardly people use usenet here , it shouldnt be an issue.

if you into downloading stuff , then torrents are best. if you like discussion groups and talking to people like here on TE on possibly every known disussable topic :D , newsgroups are great.
i prefer torrents nowdays & have stopped using newsgroups. they are still great but have lost the charm with spamming , distributed users to many servers & other issues.
