What happens if a merchant refund or a transaction reversal happens on a blocked credit card?

So let's say you have purchased something from amazon using a CC and a couple days later your credit card gets blocked and replaced for an totally unrelated reason.

Now if you want to return and refund that item on amazon and they are only giving an option to refund on the original payment method (credit card only... no amazon pay balance option).
What would happen in this case?
Has anybody had this scenario happened to them?

I have 2 possible outcomes, refund is credited regardless of the card used and is reflected in the currently active card's statement.
Refund is bounced/rejected since the original card would be inactive and I would have to deal with amazon.

I have already had a chat with amazon customer support and they say if refund is not issued contact them after 3-5 days of item being received by them so they can look into it and provide funds some other way but in that scenario I'm neither left with the product nor my money so I wanted an opinion from the community first.

usually for blocked CC the routing/account number stays the same and it automatically goes to the new card.
e.g. As per Citi,
Please note:
  • The refund amount will be automatically credited to the new card, if your existing credit card is reissued or swapped to another card.
  • If the refund amount is less than the original amount, kindly contact the merchant for further details regarding the same.
