what is Homebrew for PS3?

hi,
First I'm still learning the facts ,jargons and the news around PS3.

I googled and all i found is lot of threads ,discussions in many PS3 forum.(Obviously didn't understand many things)
Homebrew and Failoverflow do not support piracy
and so what will be done with this hack.

what is purpose Homebrew for PS3?
(my understanding is to run older and other console games)
Pls don't flame me for this :noob: question.
 
Homebrew a piece of software made to run on console by devs or hackers but are not approved by sony , in other words mean unsigned code.

Failoverflow wants to bring linux (other os) on ps3 slim & phats who lost this feature in a update after 3.15.

Homebrew is basically made to run desired code can be a game or application or emulator.

now geohot has released the keys so every game will be running from now on after a fix.

and yeah homebrew on 3.55 by geohot is signed one with sony keys.
 
Homebrew is nothing but running your own piece of code on the hardware and doing crazy stuff with code.

Once homebrew gets enabled hackers would run there code to run backed up games.
 
I am just waiting for the time when any kind of video format eg, mkv, etc runs on ps3 flawlessly, without any need to convert them to a specific format, just like vlc player or kmplayer.
