you get points based on WHO is repping you. Someone with more rep points will give more rep points to whioever he is repping.

For example, if I rep you, you will say say 20 points. but if you rep me, I will get only 4-5 points....

PS: Dont take these numbers too seriosuly....was just giving an example.

And abt the light and dark ones, the first 5 rep pips are always dark ones.... after that they get lighter.

it seems Newton's law of gravity at work here also LOL . Another query, what is the difference between the thread being repped & a person being repped. Which one is better & why?

A thread is rated to let the other members know its got some good content.
And a person is repped if his work is liked by the other members.

Another thing, how does one find the high-flyers the gods or demi-gods of the site. As u have given the ranking one needs to also looks for his 'peers' & stuff. It's cool to see some of the people in the 'Hall of Fame' which brings me to the question do we have a 'Hall of fame' where the celebrities share some of the things/hard work they did in order to reach where they are.

@Aces170 :- there's no need for being rude. I'm just getting used to the reputation idea & as a new user (a lucky one at that) so it's interesting for me to look at.

Also from looking at for e.g. what posts Blade_Runner gave one can perhaps have an indication as to how one could be more helpful or a better way to reply. Also read the the Wonder Boy "TechBoy" thread in the feedback section. So it's cool to know both the ends

It also serves a sheet for any new newbie to use this as a reference point or better yet to use this thread to resolve any of his queries towards the reputation points system.
