What is the advantage of using a third party ONU ?

Sorry for off-topic, but what is the advantage of using an ONU like this? Does it replace the default one we get from JIO / Airtel or does it have to be used in series with it?
It replaces the Jio/Airtel provided ONU. For me, I did it for the following reasons.

- To eliminate double NAT (Although CG-NAT is still used by Jio/Airtel). It helps avoid complications in specific scenarios and reduces latency slightly. I don't know if this was the cause, but I had far less instances of getting stuck in long loading screens when playing with my friends in games like Diablo 4 or Forza.
- I was using a TP-Link EasyMesh setup in my house and I noticed that unless I directly connect my devices to the Jio Gateway, they were not getting public IPv6 addresses for some reason. The TP link router also did not get an IPv6 address assigned in spite of using the right settings.
- Jio DNS servers had inconsistent performance and censored access to sites. Using public dns servers fixed this but they become inexplicably slow after a day or so of using them. This happened with all major DNS servers like Cloudflare, Google, OpenDNS etc.
- Weird network latency issues and connection drops when using the Jio provided ONU Router. Elements in sites would often be broken or won't load and I needed to refresh the page again. Content in apps like Reddit, YT would load slowly or need a refresh.

Replacing it with this ONU and allowing my own router to handle everything minimized or eliminated all of these issues. Using QoS improved bufferbloat from rank D to A and eliminated latency spikes. Google DNS finally worked without slow downs. I no longer needed to reboot the Jio Gateway and my mesh network every couple of days to maintain performance.

JioFiber still has higher latency compared to other ISPs but the difference in connection quality is night and day compared to earlier. One good thing about JioFiber in my area was that the connection itself never went down even once in the last 2 years. So I was reluctant to switch to another ISP. But recently I got Airtel Fiber and it seems good so far. If the uptime is good, I'll cancel my JioFiber connection.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Appreciate it!

Heads up, do test out Airtel for at least a couple of months before you cancel JIO. In my city in MH, it tends to go down quite frequently (minimum three times a month). Crazy that JIO hasn't been down even once in 2 years in your case. I must try it out.

So you won't be using a third-party ONU on the new Airtel setup? May I ask why?

I'll be getting a static IP soon. One of the reasons I switched was that JioFiber does not provide it for home connections yet. Apparently this introduces some complications due to different VLAN IDs for static IP.

Since Airtel can enable bridge mode remotely if I contact them, I wanted to avoid having to manage the ONU myself. No such option for Jiofiber apart from using my own device.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Learned something new today!
