My friend from US is coming to India in Diwali most probably. Now i wanted to buy a media player but which i don't know. Xtreamer is currently hot everywhere including on TE. But what other better options do i have if bought from US directly. Not through KMD/Fizmall but directly.

What's your budget?

if it is under $200 then the best option is ACRyan Playon HD

If it is above $200 then you should try for Popcorn Hour C-200

I really don't want to get a HTPC although initially i had plans but now that is dropped. Moreover i don't stay at my home in Mumbai for whole week, so i will be using only on weekend. But my dad and bro should be able to play it easily. They are not that much computer savvy.

My requirements are

1. Play almost everything
2. Easy to Use
3. Ability to play over n/w and wifi also.
4. Want to connect a 5.1 channel system to it.
5, HDD slot a must as i want to avoid plugging in external USB HDD everytime.
6. Obviously firmware upgradable.
7. Cost effective..(plz consider as per US prices as i intend to get through that route)
8. Access to online medias like youtube etc and photo sharing also directly through the player.

I am aware that HTPC can do this and much more but i really don't want to build one so only media player for me.

I would say go for ACRyan PlayonHD the best VFM right now

Pros

+Wide format Support (Including RMVB)

+In-Built Memory Card Reader (SD,SDHC,MS Duo, Pro etc...)

+Native DTS downmix support

+Much lesser noise and heat compared to other Realtek based media players while playing HD Content

+Much better in playing HD content with 720p or above (most of the reviews states this when comparing with other Realtek based media players)

+Supports 3.5" HDD (Maximum capacity 2TB) Internally

+Has decent connectivity option(hdmi, Component port, Optical/Coaxial port, USB etc)

+USB Optical Drive expansion(promised in next firmware release)

Cons

-Support Forum is not as active as the other popular Realtek based players(eg:Xtreamer)

-No BD-ISO support(at the moment)

-Patchy FLAC & Internet video support

Still a very good media player to have if you want for under $200 (USA price is $169 with free shipping till September 30th)

The Popcorn hour C200 is a tad expensive at 300USD and what is the reason for that ?
I mean other players are in range of sub 200USD :S
Anything special about Popcorn Hour ?

Raks, Xtreamer is the best buy dude and they are giving out a WI-fi adapter too. Get before stocks last.

What is ur needs? Do u have a receiver to handle? Or is it any gaming console?

There are many similar products, of course, but are darn costly....do nit want to lists all of em.

You see i have none of the following

1. Media Player - currently opened this thread of the same reason
2. LCD TV - Planning to buy a 46" TV by year end / start of next year
3. 5.1 Channel system - This will be the last thing.

And yes if xtreamer comes up as the last option i will buy it from here as i can get it under 700 rupees and possibly without the wifi anteena

But as i said, i have to have a 3.5" HDD slot too while the xtreamer has a 2.5" one :(
Bittorrent client would be an additional advantage.

@OP-Yup, Popcorn Hour c-200 is indeed special in the line of media players or streamers or NMTs.

It is one of the most polished NMT with proven record. It has got active user community with regular firmware/addon updates. It plays virtually any media format and it is BD-Live ready. Various add on options are possible(like BD Drive/DVD Drive/3.5" HDD/2.5"HDD etc) and not to forget it has also got multitudes of connectivity ports. This player intended for advanced user who wants everything out of an NMT plus longer reliability.

That's why it is more pricier than the realtek chip based ones which are sold for under $200.

So if i am able to convince myself to buy a 300$ NMT then C200 is the way to go. But i am still keeping my sub $200 options open. Since say i buy a AC Ryan Play ON HD then it comes to say 170$ and may be when free shipping offer goes it may be 200$ max (assuming) so in that regard, he $100 i save can be invested in a TB capacity HDD.

But is it like if i want a thing which has solid backing like fw upgrades, community to resolve issues, having everything that i may and may not use but still want to be future-proof (although that term is dicey when it comes to technology) and the foremost that i am willing to spend around 15k for a player along then C200 is for me ?

ACRyan yes that actually fits the bill. Also will it fulfill all my requirements i mentioned in one of the posts above ?

ACRyan has most of the features that you are looking for in media player.

6. Obviously firmware upgradable - Yes

7. Cost effective..(plz consider as per US prices as i intend to get through that route)-Yes
