make your drive in which you install the os about 50 GB and leave rest in other partition. Save all your important data in this other partition.

this way in case you hv to format you os the your data would not be lost.

one partition for OS and the rest of the space for other partition.

one ends up creating a bigger mess with larger number of partition than what could be with proper directory structure within one partition.

You can create Sub partition (kind of) in that 2nd partition just to keep things organized.

one would prefer keeping certain amount of space empty in each of their partition.. which leads to unnecessary repetitive free space compulsion with every partition you create.. with simple partition for data other that OS, that free space in total comes down by a good margin.

Make partition according to your needs, if you have lots of videos to install then make a 200 to 250 gb partition for videos. Similarly make other partitions accordingly. There is no rule for making partitions. Just keep in mind that the OS drive where you want to install the OS should have 30 to 40 gb, so that you can install all the necessary softwares and also some space must be left out for temporary use.

For you information i have a 500GB HDD and i have made 9 partitions including 40Gb partition of OS (Win 7 x86 Ultimate) :)

i have 500gb in my download rig which is 15gb for the os & rest other partition.

main rig i have 1tb, 60gb for os & rest other partition.

Well, no one other than U can decide it for U..

U need to decide as per your need...
partitions helps in managing the files and folders properly...

I am a photographer hence need more space to keep RAWs hence I made one bigger partition for it..
U can make your own priorities..

i would usually do

C: 65 GB for OS (If its windows 7)

C: 45 GB for OS (If it is Win XP)

D: 100 GB for Programs (I usually install all the programs here, use custom installation wherever possible. I also change the default location from C: for MY Documents, My Pictures. Desktop, etc to here, so that in an event of a OS failure I can format C: and begin with a new OS install)

E: 100 GB for Game Installations

F: 100 GB for Dumps (Basically image files of Downloads, Games and OS'es)

G: Rest for Music&Videos (I create 2 Folder Music and Videos, sub categories them as Hindi, English and then again as Movies TV Misc, etc)

Also install a defrag software ASAP such as Diskeeper and likes. Also do chkdsk every few months.
