I bought an Amaron Shield 140Ah battery in May last year for the APC home UPS HI800SQ. It was looking like a maintenance free battery, has a maintenance free logo on it :P, YET does provide access to the cells to replenish the electrolyte :S
link here Amara Raja - Automotive - Shield Inverters

now its still working like a champ after nearly an year with periods of many power cuts as well as none for many weeks, without me having to open it and replenish the electrolyte.

The caps covering the holes are of a different type and completely unlike the ones that my previous battery had, exactly like the ones you would see on those automotive batteries, completely level with the top with no small vent holes.

The dealer had said that i would not have to check for the electrolyte ever. Can someone please tell me do i have to check it or do i just leave it running?

I have not opened any caps yet to prevent screwing up maybe some process of recombining the H2 n O2 back to water(?)... It does not ever get hot either charging or discharging.

Some advice please..
Thanks :)

Is an ULM battery (Ultra Low Maintenance). Top-up is indeed required but only after ~6 months if the electrolyte level gets low.. Its not 100% maintenance free... :)

i checked it in two cells. the level is quite above the plates but below the hook type thing hanging down from the top... should i add the demineralized water or just let it run?

no just leave it, as long as its above the plates you don't have to add distill water

You can top up & bring it to touch that hook. Don't over fill though. You can still let it run for some more time but make sure plates are not exposed to air...
