Hey guys,

It's been a while since I defragged my HDDs and so wanted to know which defrag program is the best.

Free or paid doesn't matter as am gonna *ahem* it anyways lol :P

Thanx in advance for any info :)

my defrag ,former jk defrag- it comes with scripting options now.you can find scripts posted by pro users in the forums for different performance preferences.any defrag will take a looooooooooooooooooooooooooong time if you have not defragged in a long time. PRO TIP- copy all contents of partition to be defragged to an external hard disc using teracopy and verify.then format your partition, then transfer your data back!!!!!! it will already be defragmented!!!!!!!. check with my defrag. if required run the defrag option,it will take much less time now!!!!!!!

If you are using Win7 then you don't need to defrag, the files are never fragmented.

what if I use a portable harddisk with both Windows 7 and WinXP computers? Defragmentation is independent of OS. It is dependent on the filesystem used. I do agree that unless the HDD is heavily fragmented, there won't be much difference in performance after defragmenting.

Win7 doesn't help much. I use Defragler myself, it always shows 10-20% of files to be defragged (once in a month).
I would suggest using defragler.

you are totally wrong mate. We can indeed set defragmentation on scheduler, but Win 7 surely needs defragmentation as it uses FAT32/NTFS. Its the ext2/3... FS that doesnt need defragmentation.

What he means is that defrag happens in the background. I can attest to that. Have never had more than 1% fragmentation on all of my HDD's, except the one which went for RMA~6%.

I have never seen fragmentation on my drive in win7 , thats why i posted what i did , heres a screenshot of my HDD

That is because you have "Scheduled defragmentation" turned on.

Win7 does need periodic defragmentation. There wouldn't be a software named "Disk Defragmenter" otherwise.

Are you trolling?
