Yeah, when the controller goes kaput, one could do that without the warranty getting void on the external casing which is not possible with a branded external drive - you lose the warranty the moment you open the casing. Well, I did manage to open up the MyBook 500GB drive I have had previously and did re-assemble it back and the WD guys did not notice it luckily! There weren't any stickers which could have voided the warranty. Not all aftermarket casings are reliable either. The ones from Transcend, Sunbeam probably are.
