Hi,
I am just curious, why should one invest in a External HDD altogether,
when one can buy a External Casing with an internal HDD which works out much cheaper?
Can someone shed some light on this? Any specific benefits.
Thanks a lot.

Kinda agree coz i've done this before. But it failed on me so i just went for a properly ventilated WD 1TB Ext.

Its just that most noobs are either scared of doing this or just dont know that this is possible.

i personally wouldn't buy a 3.5" external drive ever.

2.5" makes sense as the adapter is eliminated...portability has a meaning in that case.

otherwise i use internal drive.. sure sata and power cables need to be connected everywhere i use the hdd, but i can live with that as speeds are generally much better this way rather than via usb.

i also dont want to use cheap quality casing and compromise the hdd's health...so unless someone donates me a great quality hdd casing, doc... internal hdd is the way for me.

PS: yes i have to reboot the system generally by rejecting the external way :P

Because of the quality mostly, but i haven't had problem with unbranded external cases also. The circuit/ the adapter is not of the top quality & can even blow up your hard drive.

I have 1TB WD SmartWare and 1 500GB unbranded casing cost was around 450bucks

Earlier i was gonna buy 1tb seagate xterme for about 8k, as it had esate, but i changed my mine and now i have bought 2*1Tb western digital green hdd of 3177(each) and i am gonna buy transcend external casing which have e sata for 2k.
so a single hdd external hdd will cost about 5k which has esate.

On the contrary, Branded External drives work out much cheaper than an internal HDD with housing ( ie a good one)

Seagate 1TB Internal: 3400 + Sunbeamtech esata casing : 2000 = 5400
WD/Seagate 1TB external = 4200

I will still go for internal + casing, for the simple reason: I can retreive my data, incase the interface fails

Is say this becase, I got a 1TB Freeagent, which failed in a weeks time, All data on it was gone, fortunately i kept a backup of the critical stuff
If i open the casing to restore the data, then warranty is gone
plus they support only USB( esata models are much costlier)

But now, i even sold the sunbeam casing, and using the internals on built-in dock on my CM690 II :hap2:
guess what, it detects as internal drives on windows and speeds also the same. I get 110 - 120 Mbps while copying and reading stuff from it

only hitch being you got to reboot pc everytime to get the HDD detected, but i can live with it for proper speedsand no wires or adapters. I transfer about 400 GB in an hour. I cant even imagine how long it will take on a USB

Yeah, when the controller goes kaput, one could do that without the warranty getting void on the external casing which is not possible with a branded external drive - you lose the warranty the moment you open the casing. Well, I did manage to open up the MyBook 500GB drive I have had previously and did re-assemble it back and the WD guys did not notice it luckily! There weren't any stickers which could have voided the warranty. Not all aftermarket casings are reliable either. The ones from Transcend, Sunbeam probably are. I haven't used one except for a Vantec dock so can't comment on that.

In general, most controllers used onboard branded external drives wouldn't fail unless there are frequent voltage spikes or fluctuations in the power. Or the chip gets heated up quickly.

I might add to Desecrator that mobility of data, else u have to carry case and bear HDD each time when the data is huge. think about that.
