I tried the GTA series (GTA 3) for the first time during my college days and hated it as well. This series generates a lot of hype but game play was real bad. So I never tried Vice City or San Andreas.

But lately I played many games of the same genre namely Total Overdose, God Father and Scarface. Hell, I loved them very much. So I thought may be I will give GTA a revist through San Andreas. (May be some Hot coffee :P encouraged me to try this series one more time.) The game takes friggin 5 GB of disk space. I booted the game and maxed every thing out. It was still the most ugly looking game I have seen in my life in terms of graphics. I have seen better looking games back in the days of DOS games. even GTA 3 was far better than it. I ignored the graphics and concentrated on the game play. It was not playable with either the keyboard nor with a Dual shock controller. Now I dont understand what they put in this game to take its size to 5 GB. Scarface, God Father and Total Overdose were all lot less in size and whole lot of fun.

I dont understand how the GTA series created so much hype. I would like to know the members opinons on this series.

Graphics suck..... no doubt abt that.

But it is the gameplay which endeared it to millions of gamers :P

I mean, you can do whatever you feel like. Absolutely no restrictions. You can drive anywhere, shoot anyone, jump of a cliff, pilot a plane and then jump off it with a parachute while the aircraft goes and crashes somewhere.....

ANYTHING.

That is the charm of the GTA Series.

I also felt that GTA VC looked better. Maybe it was because it was modelled on Miami and had a lot of sunshine and all that....

GTA 2's revolving map was just too :S

i tried gta : sa , but gave up at the flying missions... they should have called it grand theft aircraft, not auto... cus flying planes in GTA SA is too hard :@

I am also concerned about gameplay more than graphics. The controls and especially the camera were so wierd that it was quite unplayable for me. Total Overdose, Scarface and God Father offered better control and gameplay. Decent graphics is just an added bonus in these games.

lol Total Overdose was b$ compared to GTA: SA and Godfather was a sad attempt to remake Mafia..........

GTA is FAMOUS becoz for most gamers it is a chance to do something that they cannot do on REAL LIFE!!!

can't agree with you for the graphic ; personally found them pretty good!!!

Well maybe GTA 4 will be better on the graphics front!!!

Total Overdose, Getaway, Mafia, True Crime, Saints Row etc all have been inspired from GTA itself, and yet, GTA is better than all of them due to many factors like more freedom to do what you want, more sophisticated functional city ( developed railway system for the entire state, each city having their own kinds of people and environment, and police force etc)

The plus point of GTA is with the fact you can do myriad of other activites in the game even if you're playing the main game. You could take a ride to Las Venturas for casinos and strip clubs, or you could rob a cab, get a Nitrous in it, paint it black and make some major money, or you could make quick money by robbing people's house in mindnight etc etc. Simply put, its the closest thing to having a real-life virtual city in video games today.

Sure graphics suck, but the sheer amount of data they put in creating the gameplay might've prevented this.

I agree the game concept is fantastic, But the controls make the gameplay bad. I would have loved it had the controls and camera been as half as good as Scarface. Simple aiming, driving and interaction controls makes the game enjoyable. Gun was one more game of the same genre that I enjoyed very much.

Sandbox games - big on content, little on material. You either like 'em or hate 'em.
I personally don't think much of games like Fable and GTA either.

The controls are great with a mouse and keyboard, don't know why you found them unplayable.
I even tried playing with a gamepad and I've grown to like it. Not as precise as mouse freelook, but there's the rudimentary auto-aim and it's good to be able to sit back and do the usual GTA stuff for a while before it gets boring again.

Mafia doesn't belong in that list. High levels of freedom or not, Mafia was a much much superior game.
Intricate character development over intricate transit sub-systems anytime...

i loved GTA-3 completed the amin story (took me 40hrs +) .. didnt like GTA-vice city much and now playing san andreas .. and i have to say its one the best game ever played ..

i love the game coz IT"S FUN to play .. i have never played a game which has such varied levels and mission missions are crazy to say the least and the sense of humour .. till now i hav played over 30 hrs and still finding new ad on radio or new comments made by people on the street .

and Mafia is better that Gta-sa because of the feel of the game .. everything in Mafia is so close to real life .. why dont they make Mafia -2 ?????

LOL..Blasphemy...The GTA series roXX for every reason you can think of..The only thing lacking is perhaps eye-candy but after -all, it's the game play that matters and not some silly eye candy patched on top of a stupid game!
