Where to source good seeds for a hobbyist gardener?

hey folks,

I am looking to getting some good seeds for my garden, I mainly want to grow some herbs (rosemary, thyme, basil and such) and some exotic veggies like Jalapeno, bokchoy etc but havent been able to find any decent site for seeds. I tried ordering some from amazon and almost all of them were duds and this one site I did find had those A1 hybrid seeds but when I looked them up online, all the recommendations I got were to only these hybrids from a good source and I dont know any in India.

So, any recommendations?

Yes i also want decent broccoli , lettuce , bell peppers for kitchen garden
It can be expensive but should be good as one can grow 10/15 plants only for personal use , keeping in mind the requirement of a nuclear family . No use buying cheap where sapling not coming up or poor quality produce is end result
Have gone through many times this cycle of cheap poor quality seeds where nothing grows when season is there and u are always late especially for flowers

IFKR! I have also tried shelling out good money for local saplings but they never survive, we even hired a proper gardener to look at our plants weekly and even he said its a seed/sapling issue.

I wish you guys created this thread last year. I had plenty of F1 seeds. These seeds, like Broccoli, are expensive and need to be purchased in quantities of 50 grams. Here are some of the links you can buy from.

https://iffcobazar.in/ - The site is currently closed for maintenance but you can buy it there. Most of the seeds are very good. Also sells Kitchen garden kits.
https://www.mystore.in/en/seller/national-seeds-corporation-limited-secundrabad - Government organization. Hence, quality is assured. They also sell a kitchen garden kit.
https://www.sahajaseeds.com/ - You get Open Pollinated and Heirloom seeds here. I can vouch for them.

ordered from mystore , but they had only the local variety , Still looking for broccoli , lettuce , bell peppers . Will check iffcobazar when online

what is the use of buying Hybrid Seeds that infuse of lots of things (chemicals/dna changes etc.).. that may actually kill what we expect from vegetables/fruits etc.?

https://www.sahajaseeds.com/ - You get Open Pollinated and Heirloom seeds here. I can vouch for them. They have a variety of Tomato called Kashi that is very sour and has delicate skin. The fruits are around 100g each. Tastes awesome. Once you taste them it is very difficult to go back to the regular Hybrid Tomatoes.
damn thanks!
Does these plants grow naturally in your climate or region ?
I mean these are all exotic veggies but they belong to the same family so they should grow, I have also asked professional sellers and gardeners and they have all confirmed that they can grow
Deeply interested in these kinds of activities as a hobby, but not in a situation to do this sadly.
yeah same, they require both time and space in home, my mother is into gardening and she will be the primary caretaker as well so I can afford to do so

They don't. I am not familiar with this store. They seem to be selling seeds of other brands. NSC (National Seed Corporation), Sahajaseeds - make their own seeds or collect from their farmers. IFFCO is a cooperative society. Hence, their seeds are also good. Most private companies only sell for farmers. If you are looking to grow at home, there is no harm in going for Hybrid seeds but if you want to get the unique taste of heirloom varieties then ask Sahaja seeds or attend some home garden seeds exchange melas.

I am not saying that Kashi is the best variety. There will be many heirloom varieties you can try. Send them a mail and ask them what seeds they have in stock and if they are OP or Heirloom. Both OP and Heirloom varieties can be used as seeds for the next season unlike Hybrids.

I gave away lots of extra seeds last year. I don't have any viable seeds now to share.

You can also try https://seed.iihr.res.in/ - Government organization. Stock keeps changing hence keep a watch on the site for new varities.

Hybrid is an output of selective breeding. It has nothing to do with chemicals. DNA changes are GM (Genetically Modified) seeds.
Hybrid (selective breeding) process didn't need any chemicals/fertilizers that may compromise plants original/natural immune system?

Some where I read that hybrid plants requires fertilizers etc. for optimum growth/flowering etc. .. just wish to know if someone doing home/kitchen/terrace gardening thinking they were avoid chemicals in vegetable/fruits etc.. they all are on right track

Generally, a male and a female plant with favourable traits are cross pollinated to obtain Hybrid seeds. Example: There is a plant that has very high disease resistance and great root growth but it does not have good yields. Then there is another plant that has great yields but is very susceptible to virus and diseases. Then these two plants are crossed to produce a hybrid. This is a simplified explanation of Hybrids.

The plant that produces great yield generally perishes due to some disease or other. But now that the Hybrid seed is resistant to diseases it does not die off quickly but tries to produce high yield. In order to produce the high yields the plant needs extra nutrition. Hence, supplemental nutrition is provided either in chemical or organic method. Generally the fruiting and flowering stages are extended. Hence, the Hybrids need extended nutrition supplements.

BTW, just because we are using Chemical fertilizers, it does not mean it is bad. Please note the difference in Chemical fertilizers and pesticides, weedicides, insecticides, herbicides etc. Do you know that the plants do not eat manure! It has to convert the manure into ionic form which the microbes in the soil do. Chemical fertilizers (especially chelated) provide nutrition in a readily available form.

I can go on and on and bore you to death. Hence, I am stopping it here.

Iceberg Lettuce will be bitter if the temperature goes beyond 35C. Growing Squash, Zucchini, Bell Peppers and Cherry tomatoes is easy. They grow in tropical weather. I have not grown Jalapenos.

In order of preference below:
Bell Pepper - https://shop.indamseeds.com/product/2 -- Good company and genuine seeds.
Basil - https://shop.indamseeds.com/category/3
Vegetable Seeds - https://shop.indamseeds.com/category/1
https://www.ugaoo.com/collections/vegetable-seeds (Exotics Bundle: https://www.ugaoo.com/products/exotic-vegetables-bundle-of-5-packet)
