After having firmware issue with seagate 1tb 7200.11, I bought WD 1tb green. This is the first time I have gone with a hdd which is not seagate and see what, wd got bad got sectors today :D.
I value my data , and I always had backup on my 1tb seagate. Now should I wait for wd replacement or would it be safe to buy another drive today and probably sell wd when replacement arrives?
If it's better I buy 1TB today, which one should I opt for? Another WD green( :( ) or seagate 7200.12? Does seagate really has problems with this one too?

In recent years, i only purchased WD (just becoz of their great after sales service). But, lately very disappointed. Used WD5000AAKS, WD6400AAKS & WD10EADS.

WD5000AAKS - damaged - my fault

WD6400AAKS - developed bad sectors after about 6 months

WD10EADS - developed bad sectors after about 2 months.

Doesnt make sense sticking to WD, just for their great service.

My old samsung 80GB, served me well for 4 yrs :P Never used seagate till now, time to give it a try.

I had Seagate 160GB along with me, no problems with it till now.

Now using WD 500GB, I'm using it for almost 1 year, It's in great condition ;)

So it's not like every HDD from Seagate or WD is bad.. If you've luck then you'll get the best :) for now wait for Replacement.. You'll always have good service with WD.. So dont worry.. I hope your next HDD will be rock solid :D

The older HDD's were better, I have a 6 yr old 120gb Seagate with my primary OS installation :) besides a 10 year old 4.3gb Seagate is working last time I checked too.

WD though has a stellar after sales service record, but 640AAKS was plagued with failure issues, but so were Seagate's 7200.11 series... Its always better to backup your critical files on multiples drives, but if your definition of critical files includes HD movies, then you have an issue :P

With new generation HDD"s areal densities have increased a lot... So more data is put very closely to each other than our previous generation HDD"s... I think this is the reason for so many frequent bad sectors. Platters getting damage during use or even in factory before shipping in the process of manufacture....

A New HDD without any remapped sectors from factory is clearly very hard to find... As we moe to higher areal densities out only option is to make mirrors of our HDD's & check them frequently for signs of any possible failure... But if you are really unlucky nothing will work & you will loose that precious data... :(

i dont care whether they give a replacement or no.......loosing 1TB of data realllllllyyyy f@#$in HURTS!!!!

You cannot be sure... With these new High capacity drive this fear will always be there... There is nothing you can do about it but can only backup your data on more HDD's until BluRay arrives for everyone...

Till then we have to be skeptical & we might get unlucky at times... :ashamed:

yeah, old HDD were better. Using my Samsung 80GB for the last 4 years without any problem. No bad sector.
