Re: Which 1TB HDD? Seagate 7200.12| WD Green 64MB cache | WD Black 32MB

On reading further in reviews and comparisons, i read that 64MB cache isnt making much of a performance difference for WD Caviar green and still gets beaten badly by Seagate 7200.12 32MB cache HDD. So, Seagate 7200.12 1TB has been purchased and recommended.

Here's a verdict for those looking to buy a new HDD:

1. Seagate 7200.12 1TB 32MB cache : Best overall performance/temps and price

2. WD Caviar Black 1TB 32MB cache : Highly-overpriced in india, Not the best performer either.

3. WD Caviar Green 1TB 64MB cache : 64MB cache is better than 32MB cache, but it remains a green.

Other thoughts: Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB 32MB cache and WD Caviar Black 2TB 64MB cache is a slightly better performer than all above

I am also planning to buy a 1TB HDD. I had decided to buy a 7200.12 1TB. But when I saw the customer reviews on newegg, I got shocked to see the results. There were a lot of failures. Check it at Customer Reviews Of Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

So I decided to go for a WD Green 1TB with 64MB cache. Unfortunately I cannot make out the RPM of the drive. There are people specifying 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm for the same model. Also somewhere I saw 5400-7200 rpm. I dont know what it meant! But I coudnt find information on the WD website. There were some comments that 7200 rpm with 32 MB cache gave an equal performance of 5400 with 64MB.

I would like to be green if it does not really drive the performance down.

^ If you plan to use the drive only for data dumping (storing movies, game setups etc) then go ahead with the Green one. It would be more reliable and efficient in the long run.Incase you need to install a OS or install games on the drive , get a 1TB black,640GB AAKS or a lower capacity-faster drive :).

I purchased seagate 7200.12. Had some I/O errors in the beginning but after doing a low level format, it has been at blazing speeds and no issues since then.

Can you check & confirm how much warranty it has...

Re: Which 1TB HDD? Seagate 7200.12| WD Green 64MB cache | WD Black 32MB

Hmmm.

Am in the market for a 1-1.5TB main OS drive. I can spend around 5-5.5k.

Main purpose: Photoshop, Windows 7 64-bit, Critical storage.

My Back-up drives will be my existing 500GB Maxtor (7200.10) and my WD External 1TB Green.

I know my OS drive needs to be faster and smaller, but for the same 5-5.5k can I get two drives to achieve my 1-1.5TB mark? From what I understand, the newer 1TB/640GB drives are the fastest right now and it makes no sense to do smaller units for marginal increase in speed.

Am looking at the WD 64MB 1TB btw, reliable, silent, decently fast.

If you don't mind spending more, the WD 2TB Black is your best bet . Much faster than the 1TB Black and recommended by most hardware sites and reviews. It's also one of the fastest 1TB+ drives. :)

Re: Which 1TB HDD? Seagate 7200.12| WD Green 64MB cache | WD Black 32MB

i personally dont recommend WD black at any cost. Seems like most have to RMA em. Is that what we pay the premium for ?

power efficient + silent = WD 64MB Green

Performance + silent + cooler functioning = SG 1 TB 7200.12

Blacks are not just expensive, give poor performance than competitor, runs lot hotter, consumes more power, and fails more frequently.

Only good thing about em is the WD's onsite warranty, which is really commendable.

if possible, go for a seagate baracuda es/es2.0 or wd re3/re4 drive, they are ideal for reliability and multitasking.

As per my experience, WD is more reliable than Seagate. :)
