So, on the lookout for a second hand bike, I have found two options so far

1. Pulsar 150 DTS-i

Model : March 2005

Total Km's done : 15000

Asking price : 40,000

Insurance till : March 2009

2. TVS Apache

Model : Jan 2007

Total Km's done : 12500

Asking price : 40,000

Insurance till : Expired, will have to renew

Both have electric start and alloy wheels and are karnataka registrations

Now my questions are :

1. How much will insurance cost for the Apache?

2. How is TVS Apache compared to Pulsar?

3. Which of the two bikes have lower maintainance costs?

4. Is the asking price ok for both the bikes?

5. If I take the bike back to Delhi, whenever I go, how much headache would I have to bear to get the bike transferred to a Delhi registration.

6. Which option would you guys suggest

a. Pulsar

b. Apache

c. none of the above

Cheers

Go for apache if you have Avg or Short short.

Taller people find apache a bit un comfortable.

But the best thing is take a Test ride. Then decide whats more comfortable for you.

Imo, getting a New 125cc or 110CC Bike in range of 40k-45k seems a wiser option

1. Depends on typer of insurance. If its comprehensive or first party, you'll have to end up paying 800-900 per year, i.e., if he has insurance and it has lapsed. If he doesnt have insurance, you'll have to spend a lot more. avoil bikes which do not have insurance, its okay if insurance has lapsed.

2. IMO much better.

3. Bajaj build quality sucks, you can take it for granted onepart wil keep on failin at some point of time. TVS build qual is better, so it helps in low maintenance for a longer time.

4. 40K for pul;sar is way too myuch. i personally wouldnt pay a penny over 33 no matetr how good the condition is. 40K for apache is good, try to bargain by another 2-3K

5. You'll have to pay delhi road tax, and i think you'll get a delhi registration number. same thing if you get it back to knataka, pay road tax agaion. i think road tax is 4.5K every time. not worth it.

6. I prefer the RTR butr i guess in the options apache will do :P

i am a bajaj fan and will say at this price go in for RTR but doo check for damages and bents... ride the bike for good 5-8 km before making a choice...and sunnyboi i write try bargain more for rtr

I would say go for the pulsar since the Apache talked about here isn't the RTR.

Apache RTR > Pulsar 150 > Apache base version

Besides i don't think they make the old apache's anymore....(correct me if i am wrong)

RTR is a newwer version, engine is totally different. body panels same with black stripes wvwrywhere. Onroad 65K, try to get that 25K extra, worth it! or find some seconds RTR as well.

The new Apache RTR is powered by a 159.7cc engine which develops maximum power of 15.2bhp at 8500 rpm (1.3bhp less than Pulsar 180cc) and a peak torque of 13.1Nm at 6000 rpm (little greater than pulsar 150cc and Hero Honda CBZ Xtreme).

The new engine is not just an overbore of the Apache’s 150cc engine. The engine’s stroke was cut down to 52.9 mm and then the bore grew to 62 mm. Sadly, notchy and much complained Apache gearbox has been retained.

TVS claims the new Apache 160cc RTR can make a top speed of 118kph and can reach 60kph in 4.8s and 100kph in 17.7s. :)

The RTR from my viewpoint has an exceptional handling not even surpassed by the P200/P220. :)

if u gave me 3 options, it would be PULSAR, PULSAR and PULSAR...
but dude the price dey r asking are way too much. U can get 180cc for around 30k.
Registration in delhi here is simple. throw away rs.1500 n u r done...
Even the maintainance cost of pulsar is very low... My friend owns one 180cc n he uses it like hell... but no problem ever... Go for that.. but mind the price...

Yes the price for Pulsar seems a bit too high. I will look for some other models.

Will ask the guy if the Apache is the RTR or the older one.

Thanks for the input fellas

Edit : Just checked on the net, RTR was released in May it seems so no way the Jan 2007 model can be the RTR

People keep talking abt how hard it is to maintain Pulsars, etc....

I have been using one for almost 4 years and I have never had a major problem (apart from an accident and the subsequent damages).

I simply dont get it.

Sunny, can you please elaborate ? Seriously. In what way is it supposed to be more expensive ? I am not challenging you but honestly asking you. I have never owned any other bike and so, have nothing to compare. Maybe I am missing something because of my lack of experience ?

The old apache is worse than Pulsar! :P the engine is rough, gear box is a pain and it is well known tht in the 150cc segment, the old apache never really was a sales success owing to its rough engine, niggling problems with the gearbox and overall quality issues..thts why they came up with an updated version, the RTR..now the RTR sure is a much better update to the older Apache.

If u ask me, both are equally pathetic when it comes to engine refinement and gearbox..:P And the things wud even be worse in a secondhand bike, as it will depend a lot on the usage and maintenance done by the first user.

But, imo, still a pulsar wud be a better option than the old apache anyday! :P
