Hello guys. I think i am visiting this sub section after a very very long time. And thats because I really don't have an interest in cars and bikes - Just don't hate me for saying that.

My question is which bike should i get?

I have some requirements -

  1. Decent milage. ( => 50 kmpl?)
  2. Should be a little on the lighter side, as it will be my first bike.
  3. Would prefer a bike under 130cc as i think the lesser the CC, the lighter the bike and lesser the fuel usage.
  4. Should look decent and should be comfortable.

Things to keep in mind. I am a long time cycle user. I love my bicycle and love to ride it. But as the distance between my college and house is a lot (like 1 hour) i don't wanna go via Buses and am therefore in need of a bike.

I have been suggested Honda Twister by some friends of mine, but since i have no clue if that's a good bike or not, i wanna turn to seek some help :ashamed:

So i guess that's it. My budget is 50-55k (max stretchable to 60k).

Hope you guys help me soon! :)

pulsar 135 is a good bike...

twister shall give you more mileage than pulsar anyday but sacrifices in terms of performance, and also that really skimpy tyres on twister doesn't look too good!!

one of my friend had a twister and he absolutely loved it for some reason,so it's not half as bad a bike...you can go for it anyday!

honda shine can also be added to the list if you want a daily commute bike,it's refined, gives good mileage, build quality is also very good...but performance will be a li'l below pulsar 135 but it does make up with the comfort and a bit more mileage that it is able to squeeze out!

so if it's more performance then it's pulsar you need

if it's more mileage then twister and shine is for you!!!

straighten up somethings here!

a bike can be a style statement of oneself or just something you take to get from point A to point B.

You first got to go touch and feel your bike or get a test ride even if you dont like automobile, cos its gonna do you good or kick you in the B**t.

My personal choice would be the Honda SHINE.

Considering the current hike in the price of petrol, i will suggest you a 100cc bike, if you want it for transferring yourself from A to B :)

Avoid bajaj crappy bikes... This is coming from a person whoz first bike was bajaj pulsar... Bajaj bikes comes with crappy engines... Bajaj bikes engine usually start making noise after one year... And even bajaj bikes starts giving lesser mileage after one year... Buy honda twister, shine or stunner for peace of mind... Honda bikes engines are so top quality and refined that you would hardly hear much noise.. And because of great quality engine you would hardly have to visit any service centre for repair and stuff... Yes you would have to take the bike that you would buy to service centre within every two months or as per the manual book for usual servicing... :)

I suggest the Twister for mileage, comfort and looks (although the cup sized engine is a bit sad ). Although the Pulsar 135LS will tear up that bike after 60kph+ ....

Theres also the Honda Shine but its marginally better than the Twister performance wise and looks worse. Avoid the Bajaj Discover series ....

definitely not a stunner,it's a great bike but the fairings it has is not really awesome, they tend to make lots of noises and rattles once it's a bit old, only buy a stunner if the road you travel at is exceptionally smooth, and no rough patches which takes it's toll on this bike...

tvs doesn't have a good A.S.S. that's why we don't get to see much of them on road...(heard about tvs parts being expensive, don't know if it's true or not)

and now looking at the thread, you can easily make out that shine wins, hands down!

You haven't mentioned the daily commute in terms of kilo meters. Would 25 kms be a good guess considering you mention 1 hour of travel?

Honda Shine seems to be your best bet. It might not be grand in terms of looks, but it is definitely a very good buy. I wouldn't recommend any Bajaj. If you are not particular about the power, I would recommend the Hero Honda Passion Plus. Has a little bit of everything, and is quite good

Thank you for all of your replies guys, really appreciate it. also i wanna say i am a fan of how the Twister looks, and i really want a GOOD mileage bike (since petrol will touch 70 anytime now). So i am asking now is Twister a bad idea? And disadvantages of this bike?

Yeah thats pretty much bang on. 25-30 kms everyday (IF someone knows Kolkata and its route, it would be Howrah > Bhawanipore > CIT Road > Central > Howrah).

Twister is a good looking bike along with a great refined engine honda especially made this bike for college going students who want a good looking bike and should not cost an arm or leg of their parents :P I would advice advice you to go ahead and buy twister its a low maintanence bike...

Edit: do not get carried away by what companies say... I have a honda unicorn... on the honda site its written that it would give 60kmpl mileage but i get 45kmpl... What mileage they commit you wouldn't get in real life scenario...

note : the 45kmpl mileage i get on constantly riding my bike at 60kph...

u can't go wrong with either shine or twister...

cause it's a long route and you need to buy the bike which offers the most comfort!

Well, in the case of the Unicorn, their 60kmpl is under city conditions as per them. And they assume a drive at 40 - 45 kmph for that. Most cities have speed limit of 45 for two wheelers, so by that mark, they are pretty fair. Heck, when I complained to them about low mileage (I was ripping it with 0 - 60 sprints and rapid braking and what not), they took me along for a mileage test, and drove it under normal - not test - conditions in traffic. The bike gave 69kmpl. I didn't argue after that. However, I still can get 60 when I want to, driving in an uncle mode :P

Absolutely not. The only disadvantage of this bike -as I said above- is the lack of 5th gear and cup-sized engine, which in turn makes it a tad bit slower than the P135, Stunner, D150, etc.

Even if you would ride any bike in uncle mode you would hardly get the mileage that companies usually commit... I still remember when platina was launched bajaj was advertising that it can give 115 KMPL i hardly thing anybody would have got that much mileage... Max one can get 70 KMPL but 115 is just impossible...

Lets do the math if they had taken you for a mileage test and if they were riding your bike at 45KMPH then the test would have taken 1.30Hrs (45KMPH x 1.30 Hrs = 67 KM) I dont think the guy would have rode your bike for 1 hour and 30 minutes... What you are saying i dont think is true... And companies test 150cc and above cc bikes @ 60KMPH to test mileage... It makes sense coz hardly anyone would buy a performance bike to ride it at 40 to 45KPH...

You have obviously not gone for a mileage test for a bike ever and that's why you find this odd. Mileage tests are not done with full tanks or 1 liter petrol. The have a temporary set up using 100 ml where they first switch off the supply, drain whatever is in the pipe and engine, and then connect the temporary set up and run it till the time this 100 ml finishes. Odometer readings are obviously taken at the beginning and the end. The difference is multiplied by 10, to give the per liter mileage.

Regarding the testing part, most companies provide mileage 'under test conditions'. Which means they drive bent down, on smooth roads, very little turns, no traffic, and of course no signals. Any bike would give great figures under such conditions. Honda's numbers for the Unicorn on the other hand are under moderate city traffic conditions, with signals, and uneven roads thrown in. There is a huge difference in the two conditions.
