hi , i a newbi in linux. :new:
When ever i ask which Distribution is right for me people say : "depends on you!"
so here are my capabilities and requirments
*****************************************************
capacities
I had lot of (1 year ) experince in managing windows NT/2kP/XP systems and network. i am the unofficial network admin of my LAN in my hostel.
I am comfy in c/c++ and compiling etc is not a problem (i am 3rd year CSE Engg. student)
cofiguring/editing something using console is not a problem but would prefer GUI based tools for common/repetetive jobs.
some limited experince with mandrake and fedora core 3
***************************************************
Requirments
Will prefer free/ completely non-commercial software
eg. would prefer Gnome over Kde
will like all the automount features to be precofigured
will prefer distros pre-configured with wine
need working Samba integration withe the browser.
(Mandrake had it , in Fedora i have to use the cmd-line smbclient session coz whenever i give "smb://something" the browser says authentication error without asking for password or username)
also the local GLUG (GNU/Linux User Group) guy scared me about saying Debian/Debian based distros are damm. geeky :fear: and only suitable fr people with unix background.
**********************************************************
Kindly respond
