Hi

I am looking forward to buying a DVD player ... my budget is up to 5000 bucks

Need suggestions on suitable model which can play all formats and have USB capability also

philips dvp-3996... it costs around rs3800 and comes with an hdmi cable these days. it upscales to 1080p via hdmi and has a usb 2.0 port. the only draw back is the lack of dts.

If you require dts, go for the dvp-5996. The other advantage with this is the karaoke function, if you really need it that is. this costs rs4600-4900. it also comes with an hdmi cable these days.

i would recommend to stay away from garbage philips scrap. Search around and find recommendations in older threads. I have switched 3 players in one yr (warranty period) becoz of problems with every one of them. Apart from that their UI is shit.

Go for LG/ Samsung/ Pioneer depending on ur budget.

I have a Pioneer DV-383S which I am thinking of selling. It has a remote and maybe the manual. In very good condition. I bulit myself a HTPC, so I dont need it.

It plays DivX files with subs and read DVD-RWs. No warranty though. I can offer a weeks testing warranty, coz its really a great player.

well on the other side you can go for PS2 at 5k(not sure if it retails at this price in India). You get to play games too in that price.

If you are skeptical about PS2 lens issue and other rumored better error correction in standalone player then it's your decision to take.

I have Philips DVP3996 sub 3.8k and working flawlessly.

@vb86 DVP3996 doesn't comes with HDMI cable only component cable in package.

thats why i said "these days".. it actually does.. go to the store.. the box has a big yellow sticker saying "hdmi cable included" on it.. same for the 5996. i just bought both.

i would love to see face off between decent DVD player and PS2........as for me also PS2 was one of the option but wasnt sure of its capacity to play encoded media, removable storage compatibility. If it fullfills every feature of dvd player then with added gaming functionality, it would be best alternative.

If we have a geek here, worked fully on modding/ using PS2 to full scale (linux etc), please share your experiaee.

TIA
