one word I can say.. buy EXCEPT SONY Brand..

Why do you say that ?

I have had bad experience with all other drives ( Samsung , Liteon etc)

SONY worked best for me for years.

Have no idea about ASUS tho.

how can i know whether SATA will / wont work on my machine. My m/c config is

Motherboard - Intel 915 (i think so)

Pentium 4 - 2.4Ghz

80gb hdd

256 MB RAM

onboard 64 MB gfx

built in LAN

Liteon 16xx dvd writer (purchased 2 yrs back)

More or less same;

If u ask me out of Pioneer, Asus n Samsung which's better, I'd say the Pioneer;

Currently the 215BK stands good as reviewed by CD Freaks; :D

I recently build a new rig and i purchased Asus 20x ide burner. Its silent just took a little time when new disc is loaded. But it did a great job in reading scratched discs. Original win 98se could not be read by my oldie 8 year old LG cd rom also 2 yr old sammy writer. But this takes the cake and i can able to boot from CD drive. Also the shop keeper told me its a rugged drive and you can keep on writing discs without any issues and used by many cracked cd-dvd writers . I am not sure abt this :S

I dont have much knowledge on these SATA and IDE interfaces. My machine is approximately 4 years old. In this i am using 2yr old Liteon DVD writer which is dying. So do i actually need something different for the SATA interface. How do i identify whether the drive (or for that matter a HDD) is having a SATA interface ? Will this new samsung dvd writer work perfectly in my machine ?

Open the case, and look for Cable Connecting Optical drive

this is SATA Interface

This is IDE or PATA

Then buy a Suitable Burner
