Hi all..

This is for my manger.

She wants to get a E-Ink based ebook reader.

1. Read books. ofc.

2. Should support downloads from "other sources". Pdf files mainly.

3. If .cbr, .cbz, .chm ones also supported then great.

4. Only Wifi needed.

5. Browsing

6. standard mp3 player with 3.5mm jack.

Which one to get?

In list

--> Would love the king, Kindle 3 Wifi. But can i copy any normal pdf's in it and read? Can i just connect to PC and will it show up as any mass storage device? To copy the files?

--> New nook touch. Touch screen is very nice. But why the weird flickering during refresh?. Is it like that for all eink?

Can the rooted ones do all the above things? No mp3 i guess.

--> Barnes & Noble - NOOK 2GB WiFi eReader - Lowest Price | eBay

Old gen, but seems to do all out of the box.

if you want to read mainly pdf then I would suggest that take a look at any of the tablets. They will be far more flexible for reading pdf/comics etc.

you can open pdf in a kindle, but then it will be resized to the screen size. so the fonts will look microscopic. Else, you need to zoom in to a part of the page. It will show up as mass storage device and you can simply copy items there.

flickering will be there on any eink device.it is basically the screen refresh working and even though it has reduced greatly with pearl screen on new kindle/nook/kobo, it is noticeable.

for 8k or so, you should be able to get the new nook touch/kindle via shopyourworld.com. Dont go for the last generation nook as the screen is older.

battery life, log time reading, no eye strain are priorities. Hence Eink only.

Can i put ANY pdf files in a kindle? no issues?

well, then eink is the way to go.

you can absolutely put in any pdf file. But weather it is easy to read is altogether a different subject.

The Nook Simple Touch is better in my opinion. Unless you are very aggressively using notes and highlights option within ebooks, there is really no need for a physical keyboard. The Nook is as small as small can get; the touch screen is really good (not awesome, but good); memory card slot for expandable memory. Although, the nook doesn't support landscape mode; no browser or mp3 (wonder why one needs in an ereader though).

The browser is really not so good although it is existent in Kindle, in case you need it.

The screen flicker occurs for every page turn in Kindle 3. In Nook, you get that only once every 6 pages.

Screen refreshes slightly faster on the Nook.

Touchscreen on an eBook reader is not a good thing in my opinion... you don't want to keep wiping fingerprints :P

absolutely agree. plus with kindle you will get the item replaced in case it goes back sitting right in India. Nook wont do that for you. Nook will look a whole lot more elegant though

I wanted to get one myself, and opted for the new nook touch, I tried the Kindle 3 at bestbuy and didn't like the buttons, we have become so used to touch screens that it becomes difficult to use buttons, and the kindle's buttons are tiny, so I would suggest nook touch.

Its got the exact same screen as the kindle 3 but only with touch screen and android, and there is a thread at xda where its already been rooted so good community support.

No worries zoheb.

@raul.

I for myself not a touch screen fan. I love physical keyboard. and my manager wants things done easy way. But nook's android capability is what making me want that more.

but people are so into Kindle also ...:S

Can you do a review with pics and all for this product ? It would be really great and help in making informative decision.

I read a lot of pdfs in Kindle. If you are comfortable with small fonts, most of the pdfs will do fine.

Also, I recently came across an alternative for the default Kindle firmware called Duokan. With it, you can on the fly crop the pdf. Also, if the pdf document's page has a two column layout, Duokan can handle it nicely. But, scanned pdfs are impossible to read. I have even read the Dilbert book (pdf) in Kindle. In this case, the text inside the cartoon's are a little blurry.

I too want to buy a tablet to compliment my Kindle (Kindle will still be my primary), since you cannot read all the pdfs in Kindle. If you would like, a will try to post a few screenshots with various pdfs.

Ok I looked at shopworld.com and came across two deals:

1. http://amazonin.tarazz.com/Kindle-W...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1309237680&sr=1-1

This has special offers and sponsor screensaver. I am assuming that it would be annoying to have such a nuisance while reading. Anyone shed some light on this? Is it possible to hack and get rid of this feature?

2. Amazon.com: Used and New: Kindle, Wi-Fi, Graphite, 6" Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology

This is the standard version.

If we get it ordered in the US and get it through a friend, it will cost us around 6.3 K. How much will the shopyourworld.com price be after customs etc?

Apparently no one has been able to root the kindle 3 yet, which is a downer :(

Thanks

Mallik

you dont get the ads during reading. only on the screen saver page and the book list page. Kindle wifi will cost about 8.2 k or so via shopyourworld provided you declare it as a gift. they dont want any proof as such, so that should be fine for us all :)
