Right so i've been searching for a forum script and the options are paid and good looking, free and crappy looking , free - good looking - crappy features(vanilla).

So would appreciate some help here. How safe are nulled scripts from trusted sources? And what if i use retail (non nulled scripts) with out license?
Pliss to help? I'd love to use a free opensource script that doesnt look like its from 1995.:p

I can't say about nulled or *ahem* copies available but I must say try XenForo. It is the best forum software out there in market. Though vBulletin have filed a lawsuit against XenForo. I don't think it will affect XenForo community as they are proving that they have coded it from scratch.

@Beingsmart - IPB is paid and Pro. Unless you mean something else by pro.

@Rey- Do you know of any good themes for MyBB. Every free forum i check out looks painfully sad and archaic. :(

MyBB is good however for themes u have to buy OR pirate OR have someone code for u. MyBB very simple to install /configure /use /administrate. However it does lacks the eye candy.

There are plenty of MyBB premium themes available. Some you can get nulled, some you have to buy. Usually they charge 50~100 USD for a customised theme which suits your forum niche (which is very important)

On the other hand I like xF, which is not powerful as IPB and lacks some essential plugins like market (though they have one now) etc it is the best good looking forum software IMO. don't worry about Internet Bulletin law suit and all, they are going to stay.

However xF is costly in long run, customised themes are costly, developers for plugins are costly & plugins also ! In MyBB many plugins are free and very few are premium. But most of the free ones does the job, you hardly ever require to go for paid plugins.

In xF, not many plugins are free & the no. of plugins compared to MyBB is far less. Also very less (2-3) free themes are good in xF unlike MyBB.

I don't know why you would call vanilla as crappy. It is best at what it does. It is not powerful though.

Regarding nulled scripts, you can use it. Unless someone reports you, chances of getting caught is less. However if you are new, then u need lots of support in beginning so better buy the license.

I first used xF nulled, I liked it so much I bought a copy because I wanted to support them and also I felt they deserve it. xF doesn't cost a bomb, try a nulled first or their official demo, if you like it then buy it.

TLDR,
MyBB : free, powerful, easy to customise, lacks eye candy
xF : costly, not so powerful, lacks some essential plugins but looks kickass.

I agree, xenForo has very few plugins but the package itself comes with great features. I don't think it will be fair if you compare xF with others. xF is just a baby where as other bulletin boards like vB, myBB, IPB are mature enough. Though xF is new, it is being developed by the very best team and they are doing just great. I still remember when they released beta builds, builds were as good as stable version. If you are worried about plugins and templates, you will get tons of them in near future. They just have started the journey.

Yup, I agree with you. And the developers of xF, Mike & Kier who were in building team of vB...

@Party Monger - I wont suggest use nulled copy don't know coder put in between better use Open source script for beginning later you can convert to any paid script like VB, xF, IBP all have convert tools available.

here are my suggestions
Free
Mybb - easy to installation and management lots of add ons/skin available both free & paid
phpBB - one of the oldest and trusted open source forum script it had tons add ons & themes
SMF - Management is bit difficult i say

Paid
Vbulletin - one of the best Forum script and add ons even NOOB can run Forum without any problem, great support and easy to customization, tons of add ons, themes even we can make own theme using Theme creator.
Xenforo - new to market but proven they are going to top very lite in use but missing lots of features compare to VB
IBP - Not recommanded to noobs those don't know anything about PHP, HTMLs, Coding etc but powerful script and easy to customization.

Free - MyBB (Close to Vbulletin), or PHPFusion (Portal + Forum)
Paid - Vbulletin, $300-400, cant remember as I have just 1 license purchased in 2008 (Has loads of mods/themes)

Better don't use a Nulled copy, its like wearing a bulletproof suit thats made in china, do I need to say more?

Your host (If Onshore like US/UK) **WILL** suspend you (your account) for using a Nulled Copy.

Ok im considering Vanilla. It certainly seems like something that can be given a go. Any suggestions?

It depends what kind of forum u are making what is subject and extra features it will need etc? if u give some ideas sure we can suggest good one.

Mybb had many good looking themes and tons of add ons as well good & fast support.
