Which gaming device for a novice..

Friends,

need some advice on the games and gaming devices.. I'm a novice for 3D games, the only games I've played till date are Mario, Dave, Prince of Persia, NFS, alladin etc..

I'm planning to take a break of 1 month and would like to enter this gaming world.. I've absolutely no idea of PS3 or XBOX, can you guys please suggest me some good games and the device for those games..
