The right decision has already been made IMO. Map My India has the best coverage when it comes to India.

@Renegade if your friend has 19K at disposal why not consider a iPad 1 3G 16GB + Sygic India(they use MapMyIndia Maps) .Nothing comes close to the maps on a iPad.I have used it and can vouch for it, for using it in car just use velcro strips :P.Maps via iTunes get updated for free no need to go for a update plan.

IMO 19K just for a GPS unit is lame.Kauzy even tested the latest maps by Sygic( MapMyIndia) in his iPad 2 3G and they work absolutely perfect.

have u use sygic its crap as map not much update regularly so many time there is no road even if its saying take left lol

Sygic is brilliant. I use every time I get lost and have been using it for 1-2 years now.

I also have navigon and navv as backups in case Sygic does not cover the area.

Navigon can be linked to Google maps though JB and then you can direct yourself pretty much anywhere in the country.

If the ipad is too big just get an iPhone 3GS.

BTW he has the ANHC or OHC?

ANHC is compatible with iPhone navigation, so it does not interfere with music.

I am talking about sygic the last time i was in India which was in January i used it it was all good ,u cant expect Indian maps to show routes 100% perfect, there are reasons for not it to be perfect like people digging up roads , all of a sudden 2 way roads become one way and vice versa.Road names are changed way too often for no reason.Mind you even google India maps are not absolutely perfect as these issues cannot be solved.

Getting an iPad 1 has advantages like it can be used as a player as well :P .No need to carry music on CD's or USB drives.Just hook up the iPad to the music system and see the magic.

The latest update of Sygic has 3D maps as well .I havent tested it yet as i am not in India.Kauzy can vouch for it as he is using it to glory in his new car.

try mapmyindia they wrk flawless and i find gmap wrking better than sygic

Metalspree is correct...

But i think the newer version of Sygic i.e Sygic aura uses different maps than MAPmy India.

coming to OP's original requirements, THE GPS systems by Garmin when paired with mapmyindia maps gives the best performance IMHO.

Though the maps by MMI are good in indian context, same can't be said about the devices they sell.

The garmin Hardware is very good, but I really feel sometimes that the user interface could have been better. I'm personally using garmin nuvi 265WT and believe me the GPS locks are excellent. No phone comes even close.

Sygic Aura still uses MapMyIndia, see the link i posted above. My iPhone gets a GPS lock under 30 seconds so did the iPad i tested.

i did check but on sygic is says take left even when there is no left but it work fine on gmap as well as maymyindia car device

Lets not hijack this thread PM me your queries will look into it.

Agree so i ended it as standard car gps with mapmyindia is best as its easy to use and its made to do that and it work fine. carry ipad using it keep in car driving all stuff is not go easy. if ur looking for standard car device and u go out of city and going to use a lot go for car gps and if u need for casual use once in a while u can try ipad option to

i use it extensively on my iPad 3G.. thanks to KKC, it works flawlessly.. Sygic is one of the best when it comes to mobile maps.. tried it in mumbai, pune and satara.. :)

If the iPad is too big for her, get any of those 7" android tablets with GPS+3G... load Sygic or use Google's own turn-by-turn navigation system. I don't know the latest pricing, but I believe 7" tablet with 3G should cost under 17k. Along with Maps/GPS, you also get get WiFi hotspot for your cell phone etc, a decent media player for music (since most of the droid tabs have SD card slot).

I have been in search of the best GPS device for a car for quite some time and finally ended up buying the iPhone 4 with Sygic App. I try to minimize clutter always by having less bills, less boxes and less wires.

Also, the stand alone GPS systems easily break down in a few years because of the Indian heat. :)
