I m totally new to buying graphics card. So i need your help in buying a graphics card. My budget is 3-5k. IF some one knows a price list link of various graphics card..pls send it to me. I specially looking one for Vista.

I have a Pentium 4 HT 2.8 GHZ with 1 Gb Ram, Intel 845 Chipset, Front Side Bus : 400/ 533 Mhz . Mine is basically a Compaq Pesario PC.

few more general questions.

1) Is graphics card or Video card and AGP card means the same ?
2) Then my friend says it is possible to use certain amount of ram to Graphics card ? is it possible ? I m newbie so pls bear with my questions.

1)Videocard n AGP card means the same
2) This feature is available in windows Vista. I have 128mb graphics card. It shows total approx memory available to 384mb. so extra 256mb is i guess RAM.

Get a Nvidia 7600GS

Graphics card or Video card are the same ... however agp and pci-e are different the slots/connectors that are featured on the graphic cards. You will have to buy a card depending on the interface supported by your motherboard

Yeah the motherboards with integrated graphics do share the video ram with the system ram, however it's not possible with seperate graphic cards

Now I know where some of my 8800 GTS 320mb cards memory is disappearing to .... it shows only 256mb instead of the installed 320mb. This is a known bug between the 8800 GTS 320mb cards and Vista :( No such problem in XP.

Although a lot of ppl use them like they r the same, they actually mean different things. AGP is a bus, consider it to be a slot where u put the graphics card. Where as the graphics card is the video card which displays picture on the monitor!!

thats true for onboard graphics as well as a few cards (e.g. Turbo Cache cards like 6200TC). But then system RAM is slower(most times, if u consider the same generation) than graphics memory or VRAM!! So u would generally want to buy a card with its VRAM to give u better performance. Also u should also learn early that VRAM is not the only thing imp in gfx card. The GPU (graphics processor) clock, pipeline, shaders etc are more imp than VRAM!!

As for the recommendations, I think ATI X1650Pro AGP is the best buy at ur budget!! and I say ATI coz they seemed to have a better AGP-bridge the last time I compared!!

Your 2 questions have already been answered, however you may be overlooking one very crucial detail. Not all OEM PC's like Compaq/HP/Dell have a AGP Slot. Post the model number here or look it up on Compaq's website.

sorry mate ... but from that link it seems your motherboard does not feature a pci-e or agp slot, so you wont be able to upgrade to a better graphic card

now what am i suppose to do ? where did u see graphics card is not compatible ? wht is my inbuilt graphics card ?

You will have to get a new motherboard which has a PCI-e slot and is compatible with your current processor i.e Socket 478 or I'd recommend you to hold on for a while and then upgrade to a better cpu, mobo and ram together
